Description
Have you noticed that no matter how much time you spend in talk therapy, you still feel anxious and triggered? That is because talk therapy can keep you stuck in a pattern of reliving your stories, rather than moving beyond them. But, most of all, it’s because trauma doesn’t just reside inside your mind. Much more importantly, it locks itself in other parts of your body. When left unresolved, that trauma continues to live there, impacting your life, your relationships, your sense of safety, and your ability to experience joy in very real ways.
In Moving Beyond Trauma, Ilene Smith will introduce you to somatic experiencing, a body-based therapy that is capable of healing the damage done to your nervous system by trauma. She breaks down the ways in which trauma impacts your nervous system and walks you through a program designed to process trauma in a non-threatening way. You will discover a healing lifestyle, marked by a deeper connection with yourself, those around you, and with everything you do.

Many good points to learn for this!
I actually really enjoyed this book. I learned a hand full of things and others I might of already known. I like that I was able to just listen and then towards the end be able to have the activities and exercises to follow, that made it helpful. I will try these as recommended and hope it works!

Helped me tremendously
This book was a real eye opener. For me, it was very informative and relatable to what I was feeling and how my body was reacting to those feelings. I’ve been experiencing body shivers and intense feelings of worry. I recently suffered a very traumatic experience and this book has helped me cope. I am now able to calm my body down and get through those nervous emotions without feeling like I’m going to have a panic attack. It’s a work in progress but a great start for sure. Author Ilene Smith is also a gem. I had the pleasure of meeting her and was also able to book a session. I am grateful. Thank you. Two thumbs up for sure.

Might be triggering
I haven't yet read the whole book but a fair warning to readers who suffer from trauma that there are descriptions of traumatic events in this book that might be triggering

Awesome listen for healing trauma
This book was recommended to me by my Doctor for trauma healing and was really informative. I enjoyed it at 1.30 speed. This book needs a PDF for the healing exercises on chapter 6.

Never made the body connection
This was so wonderful. To be fully present we need our body engaged as well. So grateful to have found this book along my healing journey

Very little usable information
This is mostly a put-down of every therapy that isn’t somatic. Over and over we are told that traditional therapy is next to useless in treating trauma. I came here to learn more about somatic therapy. Mostly the author talks about herself. Kept waiting for the exercises to help heal. When we finally get there its just a very small section lacking any real depth. There is some good in this book but it is weighed down by superfluous information.
The narrator’s voice and manner are quite patronizing - treating the listener like a child.
Hopefully you’ll get more than I did from this. I was helped far more by Peter Levine’s Healing Trauma where the exercises are far more extensive.

Very helpful book
I really enjoyed the quizzes she referenced. It was a way of “seeing “ what she was saying.
