    Description

Mary Stoltzfus is 30 years old, splashed with freckles, and unmarried. In her Amish world, that qualifies her to be called an old maid. She is living her quiet schoolteacher life in the Lancaster County Amish community when she gets a surprising invitation in the mail one day. Would she come to Montana to teach? Of course not, she decides, fully at home in Eastern Pennsylvania, where she can go out to eat in dozens of restaurants, do her laundry in a newfangled washer that's powered by compressed air, and hire a driver if she wants to go farther than her horse and buggy can comfortably take her. What is there to do in Montana? she sniffs. But soon she becomes annoyed by the cracks in the floor of her one-room schoolhouse, the noise of the nearby road, and the two eighth-grade boys who try to make toilet-paper cigarettes and nearly burn down the privy.

Before long, Mary is on Amtrak - "just to take care of her curiosity", she explains to her mother. She arrives at a desolate station and meets Arthur Bontrager, who had signed the invitation and has come to introduce her to Beaver Creek School, dirt roads, and the fancy shed where she would live. When she settles into this world of mountain ranges and pine-tree majesty, her old buried questions - about why no man had ever been her match - have come along to live with her. After she's injured by wild dogs on her walk home from school, Mary faces new questions. Is she weak if she accepts a Bouvier des Flandres dog from Arthur's friend? Who is the young woman in the photo at Arthur's house? And why does Mary suddenly care? Does she really belong back in Lancaster?

Well written clean romance. Good story.

Love the pacing and flow of this story... a perfect read for a relaxing afternoon by the fire. Will definitely watch for more from this author.

An Amish "Old Maid" Moves Out West

This story is SO good . . . and one like none other . . . who would have even thought that an Amish woman (old maid at age thirty, by the way) could move to a more primitive life than she was already living in? Well, Mary Stoltzfus, teacher in Lancaster County, stuck in her fairly comfortable life gets an invitation to teach in Montana . . . and takes it! God does work in mysterious ways . . . all the while ready to pack up (turn the train around) and go back to Pennsylvania, Mary makes it to the little Beaver Creek School . . . and a place more wild and beautiful than she had ever imagined. But letting go of what she left behind . . . including her own ideas . . . was proving very difficult . . . and what about this Arthur Bontrager, the Amish man who had written her the note in the first place and had helped her the whole time since she came to Montana? Like the snow and ice melting off the mountain tops, slowly Mary allows her own heart to begin to melt . . . maybe there's a place for her here after all . . .

I throughly enjoyed this book. When you thought you knew what would happen it took you in a different direction. Good to see romance and love in the air. Loved it!

    Wonderful!

I absolutely loved this clean romance book! There were so many times when I found myself frustrated with our heroine because she kept putting herself down, doubting her own worth (deserving of a spouse) and disliking her looks. It broke my heart because honestly there’s a lot of people that are like that, struggle to see their full beauty inside and out. Also I loved the hero. He was a breath of fresh air, a man with scars from the past. Failed relationships have added to his baggage but even with his pain he was able to see the blessing that was right in front of him. This was a great love story and I am thankful for the epilogue because to be able to see fast forward how the couple is doing is greatly appreciated and it’s a type of closure! Thank you for the HEA! I would definitely recommend this book.

    it's ok but...

it is missing something. I think it is the author has to try to hard.

    Crabby old bat.

How anyone can be a wonder teacher and such an unpleasant, hateful person is a mystery. The story was fine and I realize she was an “ugly duckling” but good grief!

What is an old maid school teacher to do? Do it herself that’s what.

This story is a sweet fast moving love story. Linda Byler’s sense of humor and tongue in cheek writing makes this a delightful book.
