The dawn was what Lila Thompson lived for. She loved the birds singing in the morning, the smell of her mom's pancakes, and the soft sound of the leaves rustling in the old oak tree next to her house. But this morning was different. She saw something strange on the floor next to her closet as she pulled back her pink polka-dot curtains. Behind a bunch of socks that didn't go together, she found one pair that was different from any she had ever seen.
They sparkled like tiny sparks rather than thread, as if they were made of stars, as the sun shone on them."Where did these come from?" Lila said something to herself. She grabbed them. Despite how light they felt, the socks were surprisingly warm. The colors changed as she moved them, going from a sky blue to the bright green of new spring grass. Her cat, Whiskers, came up to her and gave her a careful sniff. "Which, to be honest, seems a little fishy," Lila thought, but she couldn't bring herself to laugh.
