Description

One of the greatest love stories ever written, Jane Eyre is the tale of a young woman entangled with the powerful Mr. Rochester. What lurks in the attic at Thornfield, the ancestral home of the surly Mr. Rochester? Will the governess Jane Eyre discover his secret, and having discovered it, live to regret that knowledge? Battling inside Jane are passion and prudence; she struggles to survive the turmoil they cause.

The Governess, Beast, Love, Mad Woman, Missionary

Over the years, I have listened to several performances of Jane Eyre with Wanda McCaddon, Susan Ericksen, Amanda Root, even a couple more which I cannot recall at the moment. Each narrator brings different life experiences and interpretations to the table. I have learned something from each as light was aimed into some new corner. While I highly recommend all of the above versions, Amanda Root turns in the hands down superior performance. I don't know if she is the actress who did such a superior job of portraying Anne Elliot in Persuasion, a rather satisfying movie, not perfect but workman like and creatively respectful to Austen. In any case, I bought this audio book based on her name. I was not disappointed.

The Brontes, in particular Charlotte, had a knack of storytelling using high, almost ferocious poetry disguised as prose. Poetry can get closer to the core of our emotional being than even the finest prose. Ms. Root has managed to make the poetry her own and allows the listener to drink deeply of the passionate love and pain that is Jane Eyre.

I LOVED this

The reader sounded just like I imagine Jane would have. Truly remarkable audiobook. I had tried to read this a few times, but never got far. Within minutes of listening to Amanda Root, I became wholly lost in Jane's character and surroundings. I could';t put it down.

Nothing better than Jane Eyre

I am a fan of Amanda Root, but it is hard to imagine Rochester. She got better as it went but seemed too fast in the beginning.
I have read the book probably 100 times and seen every film version. No film has ever really captured the book other than the 1983 Dalton-Clarke adaptation.
I would recommend.

Amazing!

Not only is this story compelling, beautiful and an all time favorite of mine; but the narrator is incredibly talented and adds so much to this audio version of the beloved classic. I highly recommend this to all, not only the hardcore lover of classics!

Perfect Match between Classic Novel and Reader

If you could sum up Jane Eyre [Naxos Edition] in three words, what would they be?

Bronte + Root= Glory

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jane Eyre herself is always easy to sympathize with, but Amanda Root's rendering of Jane's first-person rendering of the glowering, stringent Rochester is really amazing. One can hear Rochester's pain clearly through all the layers.

Have you listened to any of Amanda Root’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Amanda Root is a phenomenal screen actor, and her vocal performance here as the fiery, intelligent, resentful Jane is superb.

Wonderful listen!

I spent quite sometime trying to decide which narrator to choose, listening to sample audio, etc... Amanda Root is perfect for it! She has an amazing accent that sweeps you into the story. It has been several years since I read Jane Eyre, I loved it even more this time than I did the first.

I think you should just read this one

Any additional comments?

This narrator spoke in a somewhat monotonous way, and her voice was high and girlish. I didn't feel like that suited the story. I don't see Jane Eyre as bright eyed and girlish. Yes, she is inquisitive and passionate, but that side of her is restrained and tempered with learned obedience. She's more earnest than the intonations here suggest. She's also womanly for her age. I think Mia Wasikowska played her perfectly in the fantastic movie version from around 2012. Go see that movie, btw, it's amazing. Also, listening to this story makes it feel rushed and tedious. You don't get to dwell on details, and this book varies in its details of mood and atmosphere continually. I got a little fed up and bored and just turned it off.

Classic Romance, Wonderfully Narrated

I really enjoyed this narrated version of Jane Eyre (and I've listened to 7 versions so far). This is my favorite story and I was not disappointed with this version.

Glad I Read the Reference Material

What I mean is that I was alternating between falling asleep and yelling for it to move along before I read the reference material which put the book into the Victorian context and explained the repetitive and dense writing style.
So I can't say that I liked this book, but I appreciate it for the classic that it is, but also because it had a profound effect on me when I first read it years ago.
Also, having seen many of the film versions, I was listening to it with those films in mind. I'm sorry, but I much prefer the film versions. Yes, this book is a classic, but as a modern reader, I struggled with the lengthy thoughts, the repetitive discussions and the over-the-top religious fervor that I understand was a sign of the times, but wasn't exactly a fun read.
