Several books have been written about the film Chinatown, starring Jack Nicholson. Yet one has not been published on the trilogy that screenwriter Robert Towne envisioned.
Chinatown being the box office hit, chronicling Jake Gittes as a young matrimonial detective in the 1930s probing into a scandal involving the Los Angeles water and power supply.
The Two Jakes, a box office flop where the now middle-aged character investigates a murder tied to a real estate development seated on a gas leak after World War II.
And lastly, the unfilmed Gittes vs. Gittes, tying the presumed elderly detective to California’s no-fault divorce law and a mysterious aviator.
