J. D. has had a terrible year! Being 14 is so tragic! Mamá wishes J. D. were more like their sister, Alejandra, the perfect daughter and symbol of all that is ladylike. The kids at school are simply the worst humans in existence. J. D. is glad they don’t fit in with people that are so basic. This week couldn’t have gotten worse until J. D. arrives mysteriously at the church where they have attended Sunday Mass countless times. J.D. finds themselves crashing a funeral, with little memory of how they arrived here.

J. D. struggles to piece together the hours leading up to the funeral, retrieving only slices of distorted memories. Tasked with the most important decision of their life, J. D. embarks on a quest with Zariza, their mystical nonbinary guide. Zariza takes J. D. from gut-wrenching moments in their past to their future possibilities in the years to come - if they choose. J. D. catches a glimpse of the challenges of high school and college along with the peculiarities of mundane adult life on the horizon. J. D. is learning that life doesn’t get better, it gets mostly ordinary - definitely not the glitz and glamour of adulthood they sell you in Hollywood. J. D. has new eyes to view their potential metamorphosis with Zariza’s support.
