    Description

Maya Angelou's six volumes of autobiography are a testament to the talents and resilience of this extraordinary writer. Loving the world, she also knows its cruelty. As a Black woman she has known discrimination and extreme poverty, but also hope, joy, achievement, and celebration.

In this first volume of her six books of autobiography, Maya Angelou beautifully evokes her childhood with her grandmother in the American south of the 1930s. She learns the power of the white folks at the other end of town and suffers the terrible trauma of rape by her mother's lover.

"I write about being a Black American woman, however, I am always talking about what it's like to be a human being. This is how we are, what makes us laugh, and this is how we fall and how we somehow, amazingly, stand up again." (Maya Angelou)

Never moved as much by a story, never have I encountered such a reading. Maya Angelou’s story and voice are soul stirring and riveting.

    What a voice!

I LOVED listening to Maya Angelou's actual voice reading her story. I think this memoir is so authentically written that you would hear it anyways if someone else was reading it aloud on the audiobook. Her story is very engaging. This is actually my first Maya Angelou text so I am not used to her writing, and still it was easy to understand yet so literary in the delivery. She tells her story of her childhood as though she can truly connect with how her childhood self saw the world. Breathtaking. Highly recommend.

wonderful voice and expression leaves me fascinated

it took me a while to get used to her voice and being able to understand every word. however there came a point when it felt I was diving into her world, her story, her feelings. she is an amazing storyteller. her view and expression for her inside world and her capacity to describe what I thought could only be felt but never be put into words left me in wonder. at the same time her tellings are a political and historical account of the 40ies in the US and opened my eyes to many aspects of life as Afroamerican that were moving to me.
