    Description

In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I do".

Good thing Oliver is such perfect Husband Material.

    I wanted better.

i was expecting better. Ending ruined it for me. Reoccurring issues also weren't the best.

A hefty, vegan, nothingburger of a book

If it weren’t for Joe Jameson, this would have a fully egregious endeavor. He is an incredibly gifted voice talent and a delightful narrator. But even he could not make this book palatable.

Let’s establish one thing first, I LOVED Boyfriend Material. I have listened to it more than once and bought the printed version too. I was excited for this book and pre-ordered from Amazon. The day it arrived I saw that the audiobook was also available. I wasted no time buying it.

Then I started. I would say that I will avoid spoilers to not give away the plot - but there’s not really a plot.
Maybe that’s a bit harsh, but it feels like a series of loosely connected stories that only make sense because we met all the significant characters involved here in the first book. The main thing to know going in is that two years have passed since the conclusion of the first book.

Perhaps my biggest problem is that Lucien is relatively insufferable for much of the story. Oliver isn’t too far behind. They have an ongoing disagreement/conflict/nonsense that has them on the verge for the entire book. It is exhausting.

We wait an incredibly long time to interact with Lucien’s parents, same for Oliver’s parents. Lucien’s mother was a delight in the first book and she is missed - quite underutilized in the second.

This issue is the entire book is literally four weddings and a funeral. Five independent stories that do not, in my opinion, constitute a plot. Each wedding attended has its owns trials and tribulations that are mostly tiresome. Especially when cloaked in the ongoing argument between our two guys. One of the loose stories is beautifully written, reminiscent of the first book. But it comes quite late in the book and did not save the overall experience for me.

Keep in mind there is no obstacle to the guys getting married. Not culturally or legally. This is my complaint about the “plot”, such as it is. Both guys in book one had their own demons, and their relationship bloomed from how they helped each grow. There’s very little of that present in this book, and I found the ending a complete letdown. Missed opportunities abound.

    So many mixed feelings

It gives me absolutely no pleasure to write this about an author that I so adore, but I don't think I have ever been so profoundly disappointed with the ending of a book. It felt contrived, unearned and untrue to the characters. I can only think the choice was to subvert expectations, but it felt like an "idea" being imposed onto a shape that didn't fit it. Boyfriend Material has quickly become one of my all time favorites and I will continue with the story because I do enjoy the author and I'm invested in the characters, but I will approach the third book with a great deal more trepidation and a good deal less anticipation. Hopefully the time between now and its publishing will remove some of the sting. I have read Boyfriend Material, in audio and print, an embarrassing number of times since it was first published. I hope that Father Material can bring things back around for me, but I know that I will never, ever, listen to this book again. Or, if I do, I will stop at chapter 39.

For the record, 95% of the book is truly lovely and the narration is absolutely masterful, but the ending just about wiped away all good will I had going in.

    What the what?

The first book made me laugh aloud. It was sad at times, funny at others, but it built up something wonderful. This one caused me frustration and irritation to the last word. That's 12+ hours of my life I can never get back. It's a shame. I could've spent that time doing something wonderful...not...this.

    Disappointed

Performance by the narrator, Great! The story, not so much.
You know those books where you are like “ yeah, this is pretty good”, then the ending comes and it turns to “nope. Just now I just feel like I wasted my time.” This is one of them.

I am new to Alexis Hall and was a fan of the first book of this series “Boyfriend Material”. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of this one, especially the ending. It feels that I pretty much just wasted my time with the first 90% of the book and could have just finished the last 10% and would have gotten the same out of it. Which sadly means I probably won’t be reading/listening to anything else by this author.

If you like the first book, I would recommend ending it there. It was way better.

A+ performance, storyline left me disappointed.

I absolutely hate to write this because Boyfriend Material is one of my favorite books of all time but Husband Material did not live up to my expectations in any way. I understood that there were character arcs and morals to be had but I didn't feel any form of comfort or resolution from them in the end. Boyfriend Material had me in fits of tears and laughter throughout the entire thing. While I got a chuckle hear and there from Husband Material, I was mostly given anxiety from this plot. If you have read Boyfriend Material & are considering reading Husband Material, I might suggest skipping this sequel.

With all that being said, Joe Jameson did a fantastic job with narrating.

WARNING: If you loved “Boyfriend Material,” this might NOT be the book for you.

The first book of the series, “Boyfriend Material,” is my absolute favorite audio book. It’s quippy, well written, with complete, fully flushed out, 3-dimensional characters. To top it off, Joe Jameson’s performance is an absolute top notch interpretation. All combined, it has led me to re-listen to the first book many timesover, often leading to full out belly chuckles and “all the good feels.”

I originally started to write a scathing review of “Husband Material,” but it’s much easier to criticize art than to create it. So I think it better to write the warning I wish I would have had before listening to the sequel.

WRANING OF THINGS THAT SADDENED ME ABOUT “HUSBAND MATERIAL”:
    1. The entire book is conflict. The happy, feel-good moments are few and far between.

    2. The resolve is saved for only the last few minutes of the book. It happens so briefly and late that the happy chemicals barely release in your body.

    3. Luc is a worse emotional version of himself for the majority of the book, and Oliver is allowed to be painted as the one in the wrong over and over again.

    4. You never see Luc’s actions or outward dialogue show that he is learning. He repeatedly states something along the lines of, “I should say this, but I’m a horrible person, so instead, I’ll say something that’s horrible.”

    4. So. Much. Self. Loathing.

    5. Like the sequel to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” this book tries to take some of the funniest and cutest moments from the original, and create new versions of them. Instead of paying homage to these moments, they just come across as trite, unoriginal, and only slightly humorous.

Would I have listened to “Husband Material“ had I read this warning? Probably. I didn’t know there was going to be a sequel, and I was delighted to be surprised by one. I adore the characters and Joe’s portrayal of them.

But in the end, I’m just sad at how this book plays out, and I wish there could be a do-over.

    Prolonged Dissatisfaction

This audiobook is 13 hours of unnecessary words. I was very disappointed in the sequel to the original. There are several foreshadows of the lackluster ending throughout the book.

The conversations between Lucian and Oliver are juvenile at best, especially regarding their feelings, and very boring and unrealistic communication arc for two men entering their 30’s.

Seemed like a lot of random story arcs thrown together to create a hodgepodge of roadblocks for a doomed weeding.

Read book one and pretend this was never written.

Ending ruined it for me! Felt like being forcibly retconned and being told I'm supposed to be happy about it.

    Yeah...

Ok, wow. I didn't expect this. So, "Boyfriend Material" was one of the best audiobooks I listened to this year and I was ecstatic to see there would be a sequel. Both books are expertly read by a phenomenal voice actor.
I loved, loved LOVED the first 13 hours of "Husband Material". Luc and Oliver continue their journey together and grow both individually and as a couple. It was such a joy to listen to.

So why only one star? The very mildly spoilery answer: the ending.

The massive spoilery answer below (do NOT READ the next paragraph if you don't want to be spoiled for the VERY last chapter of the book!!!):

What the actual f....?! Yes, marriage is not for everyone. It might not be for Luc and Oliver. But I just spent literally 13 hours with these two, figuring out what a life together meant, their motives and identity, what they want from a wedding, finding compromises, working together, looking forward to it.... only to find out in the very last chapter, 10 minutes before the big event, "Yeah no, sorry. I don't want to marry you. Marriage is too heteronormative for me. For you too? Awesome, let's not do this." I have no words for my disappointment. I had to turn off the audio and come back to the last freaking ten minutes a bit later, when I had calmed down enough, hating every second of it. And to be clear: I would not have minded this being the story being told. But the whole book was LITERALLY a story about them figuring out how to have a non heteronormative wedding that represented them. This last minute bait-and-switch (ooooh, drama!) just felt like a slap in the face. It's rushed, messy and comes out of nowhere. Such a disservice to the build-up.

    all in all ganz okay

die Charaktere sind gut, die Story leidet aber etwas. das Ende hat sich wiederum sehr gelohnt, allerdings würde ich es persönlich nicht noch einmal hören, das erste Buch war da leider wesentlich besser

    Messy and beautiful

I have a weird relationship with sequels, but I loved "Boyfriend Material" so much, I had to give this one a go.
And I loved it. It has got fun and drama and chaos - and Luc and Oliver, two protagonists being so authentic and wonderful.
i loved how Luc got to become Oliver's rock. How supportive he was, trying to cook or holding Oliver's hand.
Some things felt mildly too much for me - the ending and the funeral speech. But this is okay, I don't have to get it all to love the story as a whole.
I don't know if i want "Father Material" to happen. While I think it could be overstretching the material... Alexis Hall could surprise me. And well - I love to spend time with Luc and Oliver.
Also the speaker does a fantastic job and I need to google his other works.
