    Description

Dorky, socially awkward entomology student Evelyn wakes up one morning to find herself as some sort of alien-human hybrid trapped on an unknown planet.

Once the initial panic winds down, she quickly learns she's capable of producing more of herself: additional bodies all sharing one mind. Being well-versed in sci-fi tropes, she quickly resolves to not devour the planet and turn into an unflinching biological armada, and instead uses her new powers to try and help as many people as possible.

Unfortunately, it turns out that helping people is often very, very difficult. With dreams of Earth filtering into her mind as she sleeps, the mystery of what she is and how she got here slowly comes to light while her power and responsibility grows ever larger.

For an anxious young woman who was already struggling to get by in a normal life, it all feels like a bit too much.

Hive Minds Give Good Hugs is a story about mistakes, difficult choices, neurodivergency, and cool alien ecology. It's a very human story, even though Evelyn might never be one again.

    Too much angst

The book follows an emotionally disturbed girl with sexuality issues as she gets isekaied to be a shapeshifting, hive mind, brood queen on an alien planet. While I can't say that the book is poorly written, the sheer scale of the angst and the continuous mental illness described ad nauseam made it a pain to continue forward. I originally assumed that this was part of the author's process of character building but as the book continued I realized that was not in fact an opener, but the major theme of the book. If you dont mind listening to hours of mental anguish and internal monologue, you'll probably enjoy the book. The world building was interesting and the concept is relatively underused. However, I dont think the payoff is worth sitting through.

Mixed bag, not bad, not good

The elements are there for a good book but there are two main reasons why I couldn't like it.

1 - The primary moral dilemma gets flogged quite hard, repeatedly, for too long.
2 - Narration. Jessica Almasy has impressive range, diction, style, clarity, and variety. Unfortunately the recording is killed by frequent mistimed pauses where there obviously shouldn't be. It feels like she's reading a ticker tape too quickly and then pauses as she waits for new words to appear only to read those too quickly also and pause again.

Further a cell phone alert buzz can be heard dozens of times throughout the reading. :/

I wish I could give this a higher rating

I would first like to say I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Most of the time, this book is a four our of five star read. But two glaring issues stick out.

First, far too much annoying reddit culture. Excessive swearing, self-deprecating mental health humor, immature outlooks on the world and on religion, surface level understanding of many world issues. Usually this is just a minor issue, but there are some cases where it become unbearable.

Secondly, unlikable main characters. As cute as Evalin's dynamic with Tara was, Evalin's anxiety prevented her from ever taking any satisfying action in the story. Choosing realism over enjoyment consistently made the main character weak willed, pathetic, easily pushed around, and she never, ever, explained things is a even halfway decent way to anyone around her. And then when her own incompetence caused problems, she would get angry and make things work.

Evalin says herself she wasn't cutout for the job, and the insights into anxiety are accurate. But that does not make for a good and enjoyable story.

    this was eye-opening!

I am one of those people who lay awake at night thinking about the troubles of my world.
but this novel takes it so much further than I had ever contemplated.
to say this novelist thought provoking, does not give it justice.

    So many things to say!

I have strong opinions of extreme pacifistic people, and this book represents a bit of what I think of them. Now is not a bad thing to be pacifist (I'm moderate pacifistic) but this book truly shows the many problems of the concept of "peaceful solutions" in conflicts of grand scales.
I loved it. I could imagine myself in that situation and try do almost the same things as Evelyn.
I also like how it represents people with ADHD with antisocial personality. I felt represented in one way or another. There aren't many characters I've read like that. It is great.

    Loved every second.

The author Natalie Maher did an amazing job making the main character believable as a real person. It was obvious how much care Natalie Maher put into the main character being someone to relate to and believe in to the point where through their eyes the world itself draws you in. Jessica Almasy read the book perfectly and really gave a voice to the characters deepening the real feelings the characters give.

Almost prophetic, like with Aldus Huxley

Another review convinced me to give this a try. Unfortunately, I don't remember a review conveying the subtle and integral sense of completion and determination found here. This is not a book that inappropriately idolizes homosexuality. It is not a book on pacifism. It is not a book with true answers to related problems, but it is a deep and genuine examination of these and other issues. To me, this story is a simile of what will eventually happen. The big principle missing from the story is individual agency. It seems to be represented as dignity and accountability, but because it follows a strictly current conventional atheism doctrine, it neglects the form of immediate justice that is apparently very not obvious to most people.

There is a burden accrued when one does something evil. It is like a damn to their intelligence that makes them less stable, less satisfied, and certainly less comprehending. Justice does not come in a proper administered form (not a reference to the state of any specific justice system). Even in the USA, likely the most free country on Earth, people are consistently oppressed and conditioned to think evil and to support evil. We are barely aware of it, so when one who is aware and has power suggested in this fantasy is present, what do you think will happen?

I'd be hard pressed if anyone finds a better book

In my humble opinion, "Hive Minds Give Good Hugs" isn't a book. It is a literary experience, and the best one I have ever written. It easily outshone all my long term favorites by a long shot, simply by how it is written.

I will not go into any detail, as I believe it would greatly take away from this experience, however, I can only recommend anyone to read this.

Natalie "Thundamoo" Maher, if you read this: Thank You. You have given me the perfect book, I would not know how to make it any better.

Good for Someone, who likes Bugs or has ADD/ADHD

The concept is really cool (reminds me of Hunter x Hunter), but I hate creepy crawlies and the MC is constantly jumping between elation and depression, which is rather taxing for the listener.

I'm currently only at chapter 12 of 53. The description says, that she wants to help people, but she hasn't found anyone yet... I wouldn't call the story slow paced, and there is a lot going on, but much like the MC, I can't seem to focus.
I don't know, if I can finish the book...

This book is what having ADHD/ADD feels like. <3

Never have I ever been told a story where I could follow every twist and turn of the protagonist's rambling.

Every time there were consequences for her losing focus.
Every time there were sparks of guilt for when she felt shame about failing.
And every time she panicked or list track of time, she blamed herself more.
All of this is scarely accurate, and I love it.

There's the constant cycle of guilt, the issues with motivation to do uninteresting things, the fixations that bordered on obsession, the loss of emotional control, the ramblings, the need for overly precise definitions, the setting of goals and boundaries that she broke shortly after...

And the constant, ever present feeling of: "I am not good enough. What is wrong with me?"

All of it stung, because this is what ADHD actually feels like to me, day in, day out.

    Thank you to the author.
    Thank you to the narrator.
    Just... thanks. <3
This book is amazing, and I will probably either buy a physical copy, or forget to do that, but feel guilty about forgetting every now and again.

    An unexpected masterpiece.

I thought this would be a feel-good listen. I really did. Oh how wrong I was. Experience this book unspoiled. It's worth it. If I had to give a spoiler-less description... Imagine all those intellectual books your native language teachers made you read back in school. The ones that are thought-provoking and well-structured but incredibly boring or monotonous in some way. Now imagine if they weren't boring, without losing any of the thoughtfulness. That's what this book is like.

    Good with some twists.

I really enjoyed the slow buildup, the mystery and all the scocial science things.

Combat and survival was done well too :D.

Together with a voice actor that has really great acting skill. It was an overall enjoyable ride.

If i must point out some contras.
    That would be :
    - No LGBT warning. I don't have a problem, but even light stuff might offend certain people. It was more of the cute kind, no harem stuff or just sexy time each chapter. The two make a good pair also.
    - The "big bad mystery evil" has no reason for all of this happening, litterally. It's even needlessy cruel to a point. Why would you do that whole hivemind setup thing?
    - At the end you as the listener, get force feed the view of life of someone. Quite litterally. I'm not a fan if someone goes "the only way is ... ". Because that's so final ... there's no good way nor bad way. It's just that even if you could, maybe you shouldn't? As far as i am concerned. If people can't lift themself out of a problem (as singluar or as a group), then that's that. Try harder. That's my view on the big bad. We can help, but at the end it's like with the christianity ... god helps those, that help themself. Or something like that xD.
