When the world of Armageddon is attacked by orks, the Black Templars Space Marine Chapter are amongst those sent to liberate it. Chaplain Grimaldus and a band of Black Templars are charged with the defence of Hive Helsreach from the xenos invaders in one of the many battle zones.

Loved learning more about the black templars and this audiobook also features the imperial guard, imperial knights, and battle sisters and many other imperial forces and ad mech. Reallly great novel as well as audio performance. Will definitely listen to more by Jonathan keeble as well as Aaron Dembski-Bowden! highly recommended

Absolutely incredible novel, written by one of the best writter from the Black library, and the legend Johnathan Keeble as narrator. I really loved the ton and hoe he voiced Grimaldus, giving depth and charisma to the Reclusiarch beyond expectations.

Amongst the best 40k novels

Helsreach is a classic of the 40k setting. It follows the story of a Black Templar, and as such is pretty mindless bolterporn. It's enjoyable, the pacing of the book is a bit strange, with whole segments that feel nearly out of place due to their lack of repercussion on the story, but it's cool nonetheless. The characters are really annoying, especially the Emperor's Champion. and that's not necessarily a bad thing as they're not made to be extremely likeable. You read this book if you want angry Black Templars fighting Orks in the billions, massive wars involving Hive-Cities or desperate defenses against all odds. The characters get a lot of plot armor.
The narrator is really good and the intro to Grimaldus goes so hard, it's not even funny.

been casually following the Warhammer 40k universe for about a year through YouTube videos.
this was my first Warhammer 40k (audio)book

i liked the story, it tries to bring the massive scale of the war and it's machines into words. which it sometimes succeeds at.

only thing I didn't like is the ending. it isn't stated what happens next. it all ends a bit to abruptly, as if they noticed the book was already too long and had to cut some of it out.
I've read this is often the case in Warhammer 40k, nonetheless a great book, does honour to the valor shown from the characters
