Description

From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships.

"Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes it as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world. When confronted with critical decisions about dating, sex, work, even getting dressed in the morning, Iliza argues that women will by nature consider every repercussion of every option before making a move toward what they really want. And that kind of holistic thinking can actually give women an advantage in what is still a male world.

In Iliza's own words: "Understanding Girl Logic is a way of embracing both our aspirations and our contradictions. GL is the desire to be strong and vulnerable. It's wanting to be curvy, but rail thin at the same time. It's striving to kick ass in a man's world while still being loved by the women around you.

"This book is also for me, because apparently expounding on a stage for two hours a night wasn't enough. (Trust me, if I could start a cult I would, but I hate the idea of deliberately dying in a group.)"

A delight

Resonates so well on many levels...most definitely not just a book for 20 and 30 something's figuring it out ...I'm a 48 year old (divorced, no kids, now with a long term partner) woman and Iliza's message is validating and just spot on. She's super funny, but more importantly, she's smart as shit. Be a decent human to others, ask for what you want, and be honest and kind to yourself.

Great to hear her voice/inflection

Would you consider the audio edition of Girl Logic to be better than the print version?

I loved the audio book more than the print version - as she adds a few lines, and shares her "voices" - which makes you laugh out loud!

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The best part of this book helps you to think about how you are living your own life. She encourages you to ditch regret and second guessing yourself, which is really what most women need reminding of!

Which character – as performed by Mayim Bialik and Iliza Shlesinger – was your favorite?

Both were fantastic

If you could give Girl Logic a new subtitle, what would it be?

Stand up for yourself!

Men’s Field Guide

I may be the 1 male listener Iliza referenced. Married 24.92 years and father of 2 teenage boys - no man should walk away from understanding “Girl Logic”. I fantasize that someday, my sons’ mother-in-laws will thank me and my wife for raising good men. I teach (preach)-Respect people, understand that being born into privilege or poverty in no way reflects character, give of yourself, say “please-thank you”, hold doors, express feelings, don’t finance toys or vacations, understand that sex IS NOT intimacy and hard work is always rewarded. Dare I say Ms. Shlesinger and I are on the same page...? (The ellipse is to prove I listened to the WHOLE BOOK!) 4’s across the board because it felt like a first attempt, but I liked the message and the effort.
A confession, I returned Ms. Cumming’s book - I like her much of her stand-up and her honesty when she’s on Stern, but could never settle into the groove of her writing.

I like this book. Its helping my self-esteem, and helping me not to overthink on everything. I'm so glad I pick this book. I'm becoming a better person to myself because of it. Thank you Iliza Shlesinger.

Smart women can be funny

It shouldn't be surprising in the slightest that women are funny, and Iliza drives that message home while also delivering sage advice and insight into a woman's mind. Her advice is great for women who are in their 20's, but still worth a listen if you are maybe slightly beyond, or well into your 30's. I'm a sucker for her funny voices, but fortunately, there was great content to it up. Not a particularly heavy read, but very entertaining.

*Too Fun*

Great mix of A life biography thus far, comedy, and theory. This lady is on the road to somewhere big. And she speaks of how you're on that same road too. Give it a listen. The worst that can happen is being left feeling encouraged, inspired, and having a smile on your face.

Love at first listen

I love Iliza. I've loved her since I first saw her on Netflix. I think she's an awesome comedian and also a very witty and quick feminist. This book was inspirational and made me really want to get back out there and try again. Sometimes the mere effort it takes to try can become overwhelming. But she really makes some great (and inspirational) points about trying and failing or trying and succeeding. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of her comedy, to anyone who is stuck in a rut, and to anyone wanting to get a deeper insight into the female mind and all its absurdity.

You might laugh, you won't learn much

I bought this as my choice 2 for Audible's 2-for-1 "Never Stop Learning" promo, thinking maybe I'd gain some insight into contemporary American female thought. Learning, no. Laughing, sometimes. The author's generally good-natured humor is pro-women but not anti-men, and her stand-up routines appeal to a wide variety of audiences. However, she admits she hasn't figured it all out, and toward the end of the book she tries to wrap it all up in what comes across as a stand-up-for-yourself, believe-in-yourself female confidence cliche. Her delivery, carried over from her stage act, is bright and entertaining.

Not very funny

I really love her stand up and this is quite different. The reason I enjoy her standup is all the voices and funny expressions she does. Obviously this isn't as funny cause u can't see her.

I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I had read it myself.

When I purchased this book, I was not familiar with the author. The topic sounded interesting so I figured I would give it a go. I struggled through the book, because I found the authors reading to be obnoxious at times and not enjoyable to listen to. Again, I was not familiar with the author and her comedy. If I had been, maybe I would not have chosen this book in the first place. It wasn’t terrible, and there were some funny parts. For the right reader, it could be a great book.
