Description
Read by the author.
A purposeful guide for 20- and 30-somethings to understand and embrace their calling as well as immediate next steps for their lives.
You've heard people say, "Who you are matters more than what you do." But does the Bible really teach that?
In Garden City, popular pastor and speaker John Mark Comer gives a surprisingly countercultural take on the typical "spiritual" answer of the church. Comer explores Scripture to discover God's original intent for how we are meant to spend our time, reshaping how you view and do your work, rest, and life.
Here, you'll find answers to questions like:
- Does God care where I work?
- Does he have a clear direction for me?
- What about what I do with my free time or how much rest I get?
In this book, you'll learn that it's ultimately about the reality that what we do matters, just as much as who we are.

Great Book
I'm a Marine infantry vet- yeah he has a line that discloses his opinion on Snipers but overlook that. The book was packed full with goodness, I imagine you will listen to this book multiple times.

What are you doing to build a Garden?
This book is an interesting mix of a more modern social Gospel, and very ancient orthodox, even monastic(think monks and monasteries if you don't know what that word means)ways of thinking.
Comer asks us to break down the sacred secular divide, and to encounter the priesthood of all believers.
What are you called to? Does your job make the word better? Do you compartmentalize your faith or are you all Jesus all the time? Everyone is called, and ministry is always what we have been taught to think it is, we all have one, this book helps us find that perspective.
In learning to work for God and with God, we must also learn to rest in God. And those are the chapters that were the most lifegiving to me, as someone who has always struggled to relax. Do you have patterns of work and rest in your life? Is rest actually restful? Or do you play video games or watch sports that get you all stressed out and emotional? Maybe you stay engaged in social media on your "off time" and get sucked into the drama and anxiety that is so often our meta narrative online. Do you truly rest, like actually stress free, oh my God I can breath rest? And when you do, can you do so without feeling bad for being "lazy?" See, I have always been that guy that is too sick to get out of bed, but still feels bad for not being at work when I am able to get out of bed a few hours later to make coffee, or the guy that will use time off to work really hard at learning that I want to learn, or what have you, I DONT EVER STOP, and that is so true for most of us in the western world, life just never stops. But, even God rested, and his desire is that we would rest as well.
The last part of the book will straight up challenge you if you have a standard American dispensational theology, he talks about kingdom rule and then nature of heaven and earth and we are to usher that in HERE, a new Eden. He has obviously been reading not only the reformers and the ECF's but Moderns like NT Wright. If you believe in the rapture, this part of the book will straight make you want to put it down. But I would challenge you, that what Comer is discussing is a much older view of Gods Kingdom, it is the way Luther saw the world, and many before him. If we bear Gods image and are asked to tame the wild chaos of this world, to be Gods regents in the world, to rule on his behalf, what are you doing to make this world better? What are you doing to usher in the New Eden? What are you doing to be God on earth, or are you to busy watching and waiting to get zapped away instead.
Overall I would say I was 7/10 on the theology of this book, it is easily accessible due to Comers conversational style so it is a 10/10 for story, and he fact that it is read by the author itself is always a plus for me when I get to hear it their own words, instead of someone else interpretation. so 10/10 for Performance. I dont agree with everything he says about eschatology but he is closer than most I have read, so for this it was marked down to 4

A gentle challenge
From beginning to end John Mark challenged me to think outside of my own mind. Once I thought I formed a complete thought I challenged it in a new way with the next chapter. I came into this book with one question… What am I doing? I’m leaving this book with more questions to reflect on, but a better heart and an excited mind

Worth the read
I have come to really appreciate John‘s writing. This is the second book of his that I’ve gone through and I thought he did another fantastic job. I don’t agree 100% with everything he says, but I respect that on the things that are opinion, he states that, I very much respect his openness and honesty. This has helped me a lot with my own outlook when it comes to my job and how I go about it and think about it. It has helped work the more enjoyable and helped me in my ministry at work.

This book is a godsend!
At just the right time, my son of 23 years saw what I was going through. Being so unhappy at my job, and the many things in my life that I never accomplished. He suggested this book and I have to say I have to read this again! Sometimes we just need to know what really matters! Looking forward to a sabbath!

Life filled pages from the first to the last!
Work, Rest, and the Art of Being Human.
I really appreciate the effort put into this work to successfully do what the author intended from the onset of this well crafted book. As the subtitle indicates this book is about work, rest, and the beautiful art that humans can compose simply by being human.
Work, how do it, how do I view it, what does it look like to those around me?
Rest, what is the purpose, do I protect it, does it breath fuel into my being?
The art of being human, what does that mean, do I need to have all the answers, what can I share with my fellow humanity?
It was a joy to consider these thoughts and ideas. I’m grateful for John Mark Comers investment and gift to us the readers. I’m grateful to the friend that mentioned it over one of our life giving Tuesday conversations.
If you desire to think more about these topics and how they take shape in your life I’d find it a privilege to talk these things over with you!

Very insightful.
Excellent book. So applicable to our everyday lives. Dreams, expectations and how those all fit in trying to lead a God centered life. Well done.
