Description

In the fifth of his best-selling series Ben Aaronovitch takes Peter Grant out of whatever comfort zone he might have found and takes him out of London - to a small village in Herefordshire where the local police are reluctant to admit that there might be a supernatural element to the disappearance of some local children. But while you can take the London copper out of London you can't take the London out of the copper.

Travelling west with Beverley Brook, Peter soon finds himself caught up in a deep mystery and having to tackle local cops and local gods. And what's more all the shops are closed by 4pm....

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

I'm happy.

A good story but sadly I begin to see the end of this great series of books.
Hopefully the author will write more.

perfect narration

I don't think I would love this series as much as I do if I read it instead of having it read to me by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. His accents are sometimes a little dodgy but it doesn't matter because his voices make each character so distinct that I can clearly picture them.
Or maybe I would. This is a smart and funny series.

Slow start but fabulous narrator.

Eagerly awaited this sequel. Bit disappointed by slow start to story but Holbook-Smith could make the telephone directory sound riveting. As far as the characters go, I missed Nightingale and Leslie but delighted to see (hear) more of Beverley Brook and pleased they finally hooked up. Felt the carnivorous unicorns not adequately explained nor was the Fairy Queen's purpose in taking Peter hostage. But love aaronovitch's style and syntax and hope we will hear more of Leslie et al in the next novel.

Countryside magic

Out in the countryside magic has its own rules and dangers - it might even be mistaken for UFO activity - though at the end Peter Grant is happy to go home, to London.

Again it is a superb performance by the he narrator, Koba Holdbrook-Smith, with all the social, ethical and regional accents of the various protagonists. A true joy to listen to!

What makes Aaronovich’s so pleasant to read/listen to is the fact that they are true voyages of discovery. One accompanies Peter Grant on his voyage into the real of magic and it is a true detective story with police procedure and attitudes to match. Other authors of urban fantasies (f.e. Butcher, or Jacka) rather adhere to the I-know-it-all-but-can’t-tell-you school and let their protagonists rather walk like gunslingers in a western.

This particular book is a search, interesting and often funny, but towards the end a bit confusing. One gets the feeling that the end of the story arch went through several revisions. After the brilliant “Broken Homes” waiting for this book was hard and while it is not quite up to that level the 1-year-wait for the next instalment to the series will be very long indeed.

A Delight That Ends Abruptly

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith has hopefully received heaps of prizes and recognition for his outstanding rendition of this series. Foxglove Summer has been my favourite so far, minus it's end which left me dangling in thin air from all the loose ends. Very unsatisfactory, given the excellent first 80 percent of the book. Must finish this review right now, so I can start with the next book.

Another good one

Unlike others I don't mind that the background story did not move along much. Why would I? The book is another case Peter has to deal with including all the right ingredients. I love the series which I have only recently discovered.

Too many lose ends

Still very enjoyable but probably the weakest in the series. PC Grant is out of his natural habitat in the country side and there is no development of the storyline of the faceless man. Motivation for the crime is totally unclear. Still enjoyed but definitely only listen to this if you already know the previous books in the series
