Description

The instant Sunday Times best seller.
A Financial Times, Guardian and Observer Book of the Year.
One of the Daily Telegraph's 75 Best Books of 2021.
What if you stopped trying to do everything, so that you could finally get round to what counts?
We're obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, the struggle against distraction and the sense that our attention spans are shrivelling. Still, we rarely make the connection between our daily struggles with time and the ultimate time management problem: the question of how best to use our ridiculously brief time on the planet, which amounts on average to about 4,000 weeks.
Four Thousand Weeks is an uplifting, engrossing and deeply realistic exploration of the challenge. Rejecting the futile modern obsession with 'getting everything done,' it introduces listeners to tools for constructing a meaningful life by embracing rather than denying their limitations.
Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists and spiritual teachers, Oliver Burkeman sets out to realign our relationship with time - and in doing so, to liberate us from its tyranny.
Embrace your limits. Change your life. Make your 4,000 weeks count.

A lovely book, full of practical wisdom
A long time student of time management, Oliver Burkeman wrote this time as an antidote to the anxiety that the vain pursuit of mastery of time produces in anyone who embarks on it, and invites us to fully immerse ourselves in life by freeing ourselves from unproductive illusions. 4000 weeks, our average lifespan is a cosmic blink of an eye yet we can do much to enrich it. Burkeman suggests ways to do this, tapping into broad teachings from thinkers who have applied themselves to the questions of purpose through the centuries. The tone of the work is warm, endearing and, despite being predicated on the stark premise of the finitude of our existence, uplifting. Audio is delightfully delivered by the author.

An excellent book to read over and over again
This is a book good to read, and re-read whenever someone is overwhelmed by life and all its ups and downs, or simply when everything seems to lose sense.

Fantastic eye opening guide to life
Loved this book. It’s short yet deep enough that it is thought provoking. I will most likely replay it in a couple months after trying to let sink in some of the tips 🙃
Also love that it was read by the author.

Good common knowledge about time beautifully put together
I really liked the idea of framing life as a finite amount of weeks and common days and moments which, nevertheless, we should appreciate more.
I loved the insight that life is a serie of problems that we solve, that there is no problem-free life as mundane as they might be. And that we are time,
It’s a beautiful work with good insights.

New perspectives on productivity and life
This is a great approach to life that questions the meaning of the productivity systems promoted by productivity gurus. I was already increasingly critical about them, so I’m glad I found this book that dives deep into questioning extreme productivity.
It’s definitely a good and easy read to make you think about how you want to use your time and energy during your life.
I only put 4 stars because towards the end I felt the ideas were getting slightly redundant. But overall it helps remembering better the main ideas!

Living a full life by letting go of falsehoods we hold over time and ourselves
I absolutely loved the book. The author artfully displays our misconceptions of time with simple examples tied into academic research and theory. He thoughtfully releases the reader from misperceptions of time and productivity to help the reader understand why what we do with our limited time matter, and how to focus on the bigger picture.
The reading by the author is also a great authentic touch !

Why I needed this book
I’ve been reading productivity and self help books for a long time.
This book is the first one I read that directly addresses the underlying anxieties and discomforts behind the tips and tricks, the systems and the guidelines. It doesn’t treat symptoms, it talks honestly about the causes and most importantly it shows the door to a more appeased relation to time, life and death.
Don’t know if there are other ones like it, but this one I’ll certainly remember as one of the most important books I’re read.
