At 4: 17 a.m., Detective Valerie Lane is woken by a knock she can’t explain—and a scrap of bright green fabric left outside her hotel door. Hours later, she’s called to the Grandwell Museum, where an $800,000 painting has been stolen from a “locked” gallery in the most impossible way imaginable: it vanishes between two frames of security footage, with no intruder, no alarm, and no trace.
The only witness is Eugene Wexley, a gentle retired librarian whose memory resets every 15 minutes. He can’t keep a timeline straight…but he keeps repeating one detail with absolute certainty: the thief wore a shimmering green cape.
As donors, politicians, and the media demand a quick arrest, Val and her partner Miles Ortega chase evidence that doesn’t behave like evidence—time stamps that repeat, security systems that don’t exist, and clues that appear before the crime happens. The deeper Val digs, the more she suspects this case wasn’t just planned.
It was timed.
