À propos de ce contenu audio

Some things can be fixed with a little duct tape...but a broken heart ain't one of 'em.

Avery Blake has spent years getting by all on her own in a big house on the countryside. As a contractor, there's not much room for emotion in her male-dominated profession, and she's perfectly content to keep people out of her private life, too.

After watching her elderly neighbor, Nora, be torn away from her longtime lover by heartless relatives, Avery has seen what it's like to love and to lose, and she'd rather skip the whole thing and focus on work (and the occasional meaningless fling) instead.

Some relationships can be fixed with a little breathing room...and some are too far gone.

Hannah Grayson has nothing but room to breathe when she finds out her great-aunt Nora has passed and left her a house in rural Indiana. Fleeing a dysfunctional and controlling relationship in New York, she moves into the house because she's got nowhere else to go.

Disasters start piling up almost as soon as the plane touches down - the house is in disrepair, Nora's grandchildren are trying to evict her, and the gorgeous but chilly woman across the street seems to have a problem with Hannah's presence.

When a pipe bursts on her first night in the house, Hannah has no choice but to run across the street and beg for help from Avery. The rest, as they say, is history....

Contains mature themes.

I recently finished reading Fixer Upper and found myself grappling with mixed emotions. The story promised an empowering journey of self-discovery for its protagonist, Hannah, who has lost her confidence and is set to uncover her inner strength through DIYing her great aunt's turn-of-the-century home. However, the execution left much to be desired.
One of the reasons I gravitate towards lesbian novels is their departure from traditional storytelling dynamics, often characterized by strong men and weak women. Unfortunately, this book seemed to miss the mark. Despite its intentions, it felt odd, frequently undermining the very empowerment it aimed to promote.
The protagonist's journey is marred by her interactions with both her horrible ex and her new love interest, Avery. Avery's behavior was reminiscent of the stereotypical "bloke" trope, even though she was female. Her push-pull dynamic is unhealthy, frustrating and confusing for Hannah who has just left a terrible relationship and this one barely feels better.
If you're seeking a respectful portrayal of supporting a victim of emotional PTSD following a power-stripping relationship, I highly recommend When You Least Expect It by Haley Cass. This novel beautifully navigates themes of vulnerability, self-discovery, and empowerment for those interested in authentic depictions of healing and growth and real love. And it's sexy, sweet and LGBT.
That said, there were some fun scenes in Fixer Upper, and I'm grateful for the gift as the book is currently available for free with an Audible membership. I did listen all the way through so kudos to Emily Beresford who made it enjoyable. However, I find myself annoyed at rom-com tropes where a girl meets a jerk, they fail to communicate effectively, have sex and call it love, don't address their issues, and then the jerk realizes the girl is worth changing for.
