    Grim Derp with decent Narration

There is virtually nothing redeeming about this book; wonky logic, bad characters, and stilted world creation in a baby's-first-conspiracy-novel theme. Once again we get "heroic" space marines that are barely competent and riddled with crippling foibles that is NOT AT ALL offset by them being extremely good at the one thing they were designed for; killing, because they're not even good at that as written here.

If you're just in love with Primaris, the Dark Imperium/Vigilus/Kill Team game setting, or just a colossal (sons of) Dorn fan-boy, it's worth a cursory "let me milk 10 hours of distraction from something" listen but no where near a full price purchase and debatably not even worthy of the free monthly credit.

Reed is serviceable as a narrator but he's no Jonathan Keeble.

Not going to make space marine fan boys happy

Personally I thought it was a mostly good book, but fans that want Mary Sue space marines that are perfect in every way will probably hate it. The space marines find themselves being forced to fight in a way that they are very, very bad at, namely a war of attrition against genestealers that have started a revolution of disenfranchised miners. The enemy are numerous, capable of blending in with the general population, suicidal, and are using weapons that can kill space marines while negating any advantages they have in being superior soldiers, such as large explosives and psychic attacks. In that way it's a more "realistic" type scenario than most WH40K space marine-centric books, and probably inspired by American/European troops fighting insurgents in the Middle East. Another funny thing about this book is that every time a space marine goes into combat without his helmet on, something hits him in the face lol which is great if depictions of space marines without helmets on annoy you.

A good example event in the 40K universe

It’s not deep in terms of story and character development but it is a good example of 40K in terms of it’s full of high stakes, action, and war.

Also a decent novel if you want to read something with Imperial Fists/Genestealer Cults/Deathwatch.

    solid but not great

There are a few problems that drop the rating of this book lower than where it should really be.

First, it seems like there were content edits which caused some disjuncture in the narrative. There was an example of "father" suddenly being called "the patriarch" without explanation 19/20 through the book.

There were a number of instances in the story where our heroes seem to completely overlook the most obvious answer to a problem, only to embrace the more dangerous and less likely solution, like chasing the sniper without shutting off maglifts, sealing doors, or summoning air cover.

Why wasn't the global military commander held responsible ANYTHING during the story? What actually happened to him?

Why was the governor still in fighter pilot trim?
Why are no female characters below average?

Second, terminology. A "clip" has a definition, so does a magazine, they aren't the same thing.

Third, for being austere and reserved, there was a lot of out-of-control shouting. I think this goes back to too many cuts in early character development.

Ultimately, this book made a great chapter of space Marines look petty. It was a bit anti-climactic by the end. There were too many similar ups and downs as the story was trying to develop.

The pace was disjointed and often times the story felt jumpy. This is a shame, because much of the writing was good, which lead me to conclude too energetic an editing knife.

The performance was solid, with not very many instances of inappropriate tone or volume. On occasion, a narrative description might say that the character spoke angrily or quietly while the narrator clearly did not do so.

On balance, the reader was very good, but might be sure to differentiate manner of speech more significantly between Astartes characters.

another mediocre bolter porn or something else?...

You will enjoy this one if you consider it a camouflaged mockery of GW and their primaris focus

    Not worthy of a listen

It is hard to make zenos cultists sympathetic, however this book almost accomplices it by making the space marines both incompetent and pestilent. Story holes and poor plot logic aside, the characters where simply unlikeable and 2 dimensional.

FOR DORN! FOR FATHER, BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!

THIS was amazing and really shows the Imperial Fists at thir weakest in terms of how they are designed to fight. The fanatical Genstealers outmaneuver the Fortress Breakers at every turn with insurgency tactics they simply are not equipped mentally to deal with. There are so many good characters and incredible duels and battles in this ONE story it's enough for three books. Captain Lyran himself is AN ABSOLETE Champ both on and off the battlefield and his unique POV and humane leadership is the only thing that saves the Imperial Forces from themselves. And his Partner powers are IMPRESSIVE to say the least, but not overpowered.
Nevertheless the Fists are fortress Breakers and the Genstealers have no central redoubt to break. they set the terms of every engagement, striking from unexpected directions, undermining Imperial moral, using well planned sabotage tactics and generally being a complete utter bunch of badasses that I was rooting for! The speeches on both sides are VERY WELL written and equally intense. Then you have the Governor and Deathwatch OH BOI do they add a whole element of incredible characters.

Great book Alert: FIST OF THE IMPERIUM

I am not a "Space Marine Battles" type of book fan. And I am glad to say this is NOT bolterporn! In truth it is a really, really wonderfully thought out story with great pacing. The characters are memorable and interesting. The Genestealer Cult is a dynamic foe. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and never got bored with the fight scenes.

I highly recommend this book. It shines out among it's brethren.
