Description
Alissa doesn’t believe in magic. Her father’s stories about the Hold, a legendary fortress where human Keepers learn magic from the enigmatic Masters, are just that—stories. But her mother insists Alissa has inherited her father’s magical ability, so she must go to the Hold to be trained.
On her way, she crosses paths with Strell, a wandering musician from the plains. Though Alissa is not sure she can trust a plainsman, Strell has something Alissa needs—one of her father’s old maps. Traveling together, they can reach the Hold before the snow sets in. But they don’t know that the Hold is nearly empty. The Keeper Bailic has sent the Masters on a fool’s errand and systematically killed the other Keepers in his search for the First Truth, a book of magic that will give him ultimate power. And he believes that Alissa and Strell hold the secret of the book’s hiding place.
This is the first book in the Truth Series by Dawn Cook, who also writes under the pen name Kim Harrison.

Grosse déception
J'adore l'histoire mais je n'aime pas du tout la lecture qui en est faite. L'accent est trop prononcé, les personnes ont tous la même voix. Je suis vraiment déçue.

Don't be Mislead
I found the cover of these books very misleading and I would never have purchased the series based on their covers except that the first book was on sale.
I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and unlike so many other fantasy series there are not a huge number of characters to become familiar with to get involved with the storyline.
The first book was a little slow to get going but by the fourth book I was caught up with the story and the characters. The ending in the fourth book was poignant and an appropriate conclusion to the series. Please accept my recommendation.

Off to great start!
I am a huge fan of the combination of Kim Harrison (Dawn Cook) and narrator
Margureite Gavin! I have read every Rachel Morgan book that's been out and loved them dearly. I ended up listening to this whole book in two days, yep didn't get anything else done and I am downloading the next one.

amazing series
the first half of this book was only worth 3 stars. but the second half is so strong, and the rest of the series is so incredible, i have to give this story the 5 stars it deserves. this book ends on a clifhanger, which prompted me to continue the series. i'm very happy i did cause this series is excelent. the best description i can come up with is if ilona andrews and robert jordan had had a chance to colaberate on a story, this series would likely have been the result. if you like either of those authors, then you will love this series. just be patient with the early part of this book, and i predict you will be getting the rest of the 'truth' books very, very soon.

Good book Marguerite Gavin is amazing like usual
I'm going to start by saying I love this book. Every time i thought i could guess where it was going to go it went a different direction. Which is something i adore.
But the protagonists make me want to bang my head against the nearest hard surface. Not because they are 1-note cliches but because they are such TEENAGERS! Gah (Slight spoiler) when your life is in danger you don't take the time to make pretty gifts for each other! The two main characters spend a good 2/3 of the book rapped up in themselves and each other.
The female protagonist is willfully bullheaded and short sited to the point of stupidity. Where it not for the male protagonist she would have been screwed thrice over. Thats not to say she doesn't have some redeeming qualities (I like her despite myself even when she makes me want to face palm).
The Male protagonist shows the most growth through this book. In the beginning he is seriously racist. But quickly (quick because he is smart) he learns to see what is underneath. (Though the two of them fight like crazy over stupid stuff a lot {again teenagers}). He makes some foolish decision but unlike FP he learns from them and keeps trying. Hell even when she gives up he keeps to do the thing there were there to do! By all rights HE should be on the cover of the book and not her.
The villain never seemed to be all that threatening. Even considering the fact that early in the book (I think his introduction) he commits murder. While quite insane and though we are often told of how "dangerous" he is; he does nothing to really earn it. He while (again more spoilers) not being seriously intelligent manages to convince a large group of people to try and find an island. Thus killing them (I guess they drowned??) he apparently killed members of his order as they returned to the hold. I say apparently because instead of showing the terrible deeds he committed, the author chose to say "he did this, and this............oh and this! See how horrible and scary he is?".
Also the sequel bait was ridiculously obvious.
The funny thing is, even with all of my issues with this book. I really enjoyed it, I'm not sure why though. I enjoyed it enough that i've bought the next book.
Perhaps the reason is although it has its issues the characters seem like real people. The world left me wanting to know more and I would like to see what happens next.

Love it!
I listened to this book and then the entire series. I absolutely loved it. The character development is great and you feel like you know the characters and have to find out how it all turns out for them. The narrator's voice annoyed me a bit at first but after a while I was used to her and all annoyance was gone with the anticipation of what was going on in the story. I am going to have my 10 year old daughter read the series. It is a wonderful story and has a love story intertwined but with no inappropriate scenes that a ten year old couldn't hear. Really great read, or listen rather.

hard to force myself to finish the book
Unbelievable emotional dialogue from start to finish. Characters that overreact to each situation and then are immediately over their fight and in love again. I know it is easy for a guy who has never written a book to criticize, but this was a tough listen. Sadly, they sold me book two on sale, forcing the purchase of book one. Since I don't like to start in the middle I unfortunately paid full price for this. The next book was not much better. In the book's defense, I must say that its probably great for the intended audience which must be 12 year old girls and not 46 year old men. Can a fantasy writer please write a single story that ends without the need for 5,10, or 15 books?

not for adults
I'm guessing that the author is writing for adolescents, so as an adult, it isn't on my "favorites" list., The first 3/4 of the book moves quite slowly. The action picks up at the end, however, leading me to believe that the second book might be a better read. I was constantly surprised at the author's use of creative "curse words" such as "Burn it to Ash" and "Oh Wolves!" There is a slight promise of romance, but a promise is about all you get. As an adult reader, who loved the teen oriented Twilight series and Hunger Games series, I'm afraid I can only give this book two stars. That may be unfair, as the book was probably not written for adults, in the first place.

OK. Just OK.
This had a lot of potential, but it was slow paced, and the characters could have been better developed. The world, and the concept is creative is worth a try, but this isn't one I would recommend. It's a good book to get on sale. Maybe the print version is better.

Just as it got started... it ended
After reading so many glowing and positive reviews, I felt I had to add mine. The book is well writen but if you want action and adventure, then this is not for you. The cover is representative of nothing. And, to make matters worse, you will have to get the next book as this book has no ending.
