REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK | #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through.”—Reese Witherspoon
Evie Porter has everything a nice Southern girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence, a tight group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.
The identity comes first: Evie Porter. Once she’s given a name and location by her mysterious boss, Mr. Smith, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it. Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job.
Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.
Evie Porter must stay one step ahead of her past while making sure there's still a future in front of her. The stakes couldn't be higher—but then, Evie has always liked a challenge. . . .

Agenda within agenda
5 stars
I should always trust Reese’s Book Club choices because Ashley Elston delivered a mind blowing, twisted and absolutely gripping story!
This is a cat and mouse game with a very long agenda where nothing is as it seems and you have twists within twists!
Our heroine is a morally grey character, adding to our guilty pleasure. Evie or Lucca is a con artist working for a mysterious Mr Smith.
Think like Mission Impossible or Ocean Eleven kind of job.
This time though, it’s different as Evie is really attracted to her mark and his living style.
She dreams of a white picket fence, a garden, a quiet life.
But if she wants to escape her current life, she will have the biggest challenge ahead of her because no one leaves Mr Smith’s world alive.
One of the biggest assets of what will probably be one of my favorite thrillers of the year was Evie’s character and how the author managed to explain why she went from a poor quiet girl to that smart, resourceful and morally grey woman. It’s not easy to make the reader forgive con artists, to have them root for a girl who doesn’t walk a straight line and yet, Ashley Elston raised to the occasion!
The pace is steady switching between past and present events and the mind games are outstanding, Evie always needing to be two steps ahead of Mr Smith. I tried to formulate explanation for the big scheme, to find Mr Smith’s secret identity and his end goal, to no avail!
We have surprises till the last minute.
And without giving away any details, I thought that the ending was very satisfying!
I now want more from that author!
