Description

Gods, demons, and heroes. Standard MMO fare - or so Cerys Collins thought.

As a long-time gamer and guild leader, Cerys has always wondered what it would be like to live in virtual reality. When her guild members convince her to try a new VRMMO, she discovers reality is far more complex than she knew. Chosen by the gods of another world, Cerys finds herself trapped between warring factions: a tyrannical human empire and an oppressed kingdom of demons.

When she discovers her best friend has been dragged into this new world as well, Cerys is forced to choose between saving her friend or looking at the bigger picture. If Cerys is to be anything more than a pawn in the gods' game, she'll have to leverage everything she's learned on her home world and in past games, before it's too late. With a cocky incubus king vying for more than her loyalty, her quest won’t be an easy one.

The Deck of Souls series contains some dark themes, profanity, violence, and adult relationships.

Book 2 better get here soon!

Let me start off by saying that I really enjoyed this book, full stop...

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I would be remiss if I didn't say that the book that I got was not the book that I thought it would be. What I thought I was getting myself into was your standard LitRPG with funny characters, ridiculous situations, with a little bit of stat crunch thrown in. This book has all of that in it, as any good LitRPG should, but at its core, this book is really about the growing relationship of the two MCs. It's kind of like if you threw half of a romance novel and a really good game-lit book in a blender and pushed the puree button. The result is something that could go HORRIBLY WRONG, but the care that Bonnie Price put into the mixture made it come out smooth and tasty. Make no mistake about it, this book IS LitRPG. Characters in the book have stat progressions, questing (of a sort), and guild drama. Unlike books such as The Land or War Aeternus, where these elements are front and center to the story, in Fateseal they function much more on the periphery.

Five things I liked about the book:
1. Super-interesting world with great world building.
2. Cool abilities and classes that offer a bit of a unique spin on the standard classes (warrior, mage, priest, rogue, ranger, etc)
3. The demons are the "good guys" as it relates to the story.
4. The relationship building between Seres and Idris after about the half-way point of the book.
5. The fantastic cadre of secondary characters in the demon lands (not even going to try to spell it out correctly).

Five things that I didn't care for as much (note, I did not say BAD):
1. Pretty much the whole time Idris goes back to Earth with Seres. It almost felt like a completely different book.
2. Not much time was spent on a few "core" mechanics like coinage and crafting.
3. I feel like the preparations for the impending Outworlder "invasion" could have done with more time
4. I wanted to know more about what Seres told Ebonwing to do before she left to become the demon champion. Did they follow her orders? Is it working? We got a little bit of this info, but I was craving more.
5. Bonnie Price writes combat scenes so well, it's a shame there weren't more occasions for her to flex those particular writing muscles.

This book is setting us up for a fantastic LitRPG series. One that I hope will be a long one, because I am now invested. I didn't think I would be if you would have asked me at the end of chapter 20 or so, but I definitely am having now finished the story. There is a TON of groundwork that needed to be laid down to get you to care about the characters (and their relationship) at the end of the book and Bonnie Price does an outstanding job giving us what we need to get there.

This is one that is absolutely worth giving your time and attention. For some, there will be times where you question your choice... stick with it. It pays off big time.

Last thing... How good is Soundbooth Theater? The crew did such an amazing job with the narration of this book. Every decision they made was a good one. I just love it when they do LitRPG. Very few are able to equal the quality of their productions.

It's another book for the "would recommend to friends list" from me.

This is a boring romantic fantasy

After 10hrs into this book I returned it for a credit because there was no action or anything really. Just a character holding back sexual impulses towards a demon king for 10hrs. I got this book because I love all the narrators for this book, but the story wasn't for me.

A very wonderful book.

I loved the story from the moment they started the interactions between the protagonist and the King.

the narrators are amazing in the ways they portray the inflection in everyone's voices and just the entire atmosphere created.

Romance with gaming elements

So to clarify this book is a high fantasy romance book that takes place in a "game world" with no mechanics of gaming. There's nothing wrong with that it is a good book for the most part. Great job on the Narration. I can honestly say i would've been less committed to finishing if the narrators were so damn good.

Mildly infuriating, moderately disappointing.

I can’t speak for the entire book, I’m not finished, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to.

This appears to be a Romance novel with Fantasy elements more than the reverse. Be warned.
Super awesome deadly girl/renowned Gamer & guild leader meets super Handsome well endowed Demon King. She’s incredibly unique and charming, he immediately falls for her. She’s so not into him because he’s so handsome and charming and like, totally infuriating.

I liked the first bit, with Litrpg/fantastic elements and I’m hoping to get back to that at some point. Out of the Five hours I’ve listened to so far, I would skip 4 of them.

Great performances by the way, a great cast of voice actors.

*Sigh*

If you are looking for a barely passable romance novel this book is for you... it’s got some litrpg elements to it but the story is basically forcing two very attractive people together. I was looking for a litrpg novel not this. Voice acting is pretty good though.

When gods play games

When gods play games mortals always suffer. The world and the mortals matter little as no matter the race the gods don’t care. We are nothing more to them than pieces on a board. In this case the gods have champions that come from other worlds to effect changes in their worlds. Souls are traded as if they are nothing. The deck is rigged and for centuries secrets have been kept as gods stack the deck in their favor. The all star cast takes this audiobook and elevates it to an audio drama. The story is great the “game” mechanics are well thought out. Be ready for a wild ride. Realize not for young ears as there are some scenes of a sexual nature. Enjoy this great intro to a new LITRPG series. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

annoying in the beginning, ok at the end

the most stupid protagonist there is, even if there is an 'inworld reason'.
it feels like she is indecisive just for the sake of drama. there is no comprehensible reason for her acting the way she does.
it gets better after certain events and the world is an intresting one. the story is also pretty slow in getting startet, but really want to know how it continues after following it this far.
all in all i would recommend to give the story a go as long as you are not too annoyed by what i would call 'cliché romance novel elements'

the narrators are doing a damn fine job, which is not really surprising, considering who they are.
it is also really immersive that different characters are spoken by different people.
