Counting sheep: With this simple method, children and adults alike can find their way to sleep. The task is constant - monotonous - and tiresome: keep on counting sheep. With this method you can distract yourself from other thoughts that normally prevent you from falling asleep. So, keep counting sheep until you find a monotonous rhythm.
It is also helpful to imagine the sheep. This will stimulate your imagination and your concentration will be solely on this inner image.
Counting sheep is a method to keep you from disturbing thoughts while falling asleep, e.g. the compulsion to fall asleep now or the worries from everyday life, what still has to be done.
Purely scientifically, this method can neither be completely refuted nor generally confirmed. So counting sheep is definitely worth a try. The more often you try it, the faster you will succeed in falling asleep.
