I found Faith’s First Case vivid and engrossing. It’s an intriguing detective story, and a brilliant insight into the vibrant and precarious lives of a whole community. There are twists and turns, shocks and surprises, and glimpses of an alarming and sometimes tragic underworld. The writing is clean, rhythmic and rich in sensory detail, from the steam and clatter of the kitchens to the particular silence that falls when four women understand that everything has changed. I LOVED it. Brilliant story, fantastic characters, beautiful writing. I feel bereft now I've finished the book and no longer have Faith in my life. If there's any justice in this world, she'll get a sequel, a TV series AND a cookbook! I was particularly impressed by the complexity of Jeffrey's characters and how compassionately he portrayed the moral dilemmas that Faith in particular faced - that doing the 'right' thing isn't always the legal thing. Faith's First Case goes above and beyond crime fiction - I was so impressed by the depth and breadth of the novel. What a fantastic achievement!
