Description

Every choice has consequences - but 17-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden that she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin - the deadliest of demons - has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her, including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city - and her race - from destruction. Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side - and then fight like hell.

Not up to par

I am usually a huge fan of Armentrout's work, but this series just really failed for me. The premise was interesting and obviously I had to finish the series. However, with every page turn I became increasingly astounded by how often I would roll my eyes. The overuse of similes and metaphors really ruined my overall enjoyment. There was an exceeding amount of fluff. Don't get me wrong- I love my fluff, but when I say exceeding... It was over the top and completely unnecessary. I repeat, the storyline was intriguing, but be warned that you will have to muddle through redundant descriptions and less than provocative character development. (The reader reminded me of Mulan when Mulan had to pretend to be a boy- I've had better readers, but she wasn't the worst I've heard) Overall, this was a mediocre book- that could have potentially been phenomenal with only better editing.

Wonderful series

Seventeen year old Layla has a tough choice to make between the Warden she has been crushing on her whole life and the sexy Demon who recently swept into her life. Then there is also the matter of the Lilan, the evil step-brother intent on bringing about Armageddon. And Layla is the only one who can stop him.

Action-packed and steaming, the third installment of The Dark Elements series lives up to the high expectations set by the first two books. The story resolves the relationship issues and turns to more internal struggles as Layla faces her fears and discovers her inner strengths. Further questions are raised surrounding the true nature of ‘evil’, and Layla’s moral mettle is tested to the fullest extent, bringing her character development to a mature and sweeping end.

I do feel that the novel would have been a 5 star and not a 4 star if it had ended slightly earlier than it did. I’m a reader who likes to know that the conflict has been resolved, but still wants a little room for dreaming up my own ending. Armentrout really tied double knots on this ending though, and it ventured a little too far into the soppy soap for my tastes.

But, I still loved this book and adored the series!

A bit disappointed

Usually, i love Armentrout’s work because the plot twists are so unexpected, and you are really hanging in there for every word. But this book... so... many... expected... turns... and... twists... So I can’t help but feel disappointed with this book. :/

Great trilogy

Love love this book! I don’t know why I hold off reading it this long! Roth is just the sweet even if he’s a badass lol I love all the characters in here and I feel so bad for Zen but I love the way she chose and am so glad that he was not change to a bad guy like some of the books I’ve read. He’s true to himself. I would Love to read more about him! Saskia did an awesome job at narrating

I thought it would NEVER end

I liked the first two...only they just got more agonizing...I thought it would never end, but I hate leaving things incomplete.

just not spectacular

I love the first two installments in this series, but I feel as if the author was about as interested in this story as I was. It seemed drawn out and unnecessarily long, I needed to finish this series but I had to practically force myself to finish it

Mostly filler

What disappointed you about Every Last Breath?

The first two in the series were decent. Definitely up to par with other books I've read from this author. This one almost felt like it was written by a different person. The majority of the book was just filler. I feel like if you grouped up all the ridiculous and childish "dirty" talk, kissing, describing how hot the guy is and the main character describing whatever just happened back as though we are too stupid to know what just happened, this book would be half the length. The story itself could have been fine but this book was sadly hard to get through unlike the first two in the series.

Has Every Last Breath turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I won't likely buy more from this author.

What does Saskia Maarleveld bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did a good job bringing life to the characters.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Relief. I was really glad when it was over. Not something I can say about many books.

Series finale falls short in audio version

Would you try another book from Jennifer L. Armentrout and/or Saskia Maarleveld?

I would definitely buy another book written by Jennifer L Armentrout. In fact, I have already done so.

However, I will probably not choose a book narrated by Saskia Maarleveld at this time. Perhaps I will reconsider at a later time.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I find the ending a bit cheesy, and repetitive in its foreplay and sex.

The SIX MONTHS LATER section is incongruous with the feel of the rest of the series. I would rather have gotten insight from the six months prior.

Did Saskia Maarleveld do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She allows too much bleeding between the voices of the many characters. The only exception is Grim. The voice she gives to him is exceptional.

Did Every Last Breath inspire you to do anything?

Read other Armentrout books.

Any additional comments?

There is a lot of repetition in the way each of the sex scenes are written, throughout the entire series. With so much repetition, each scene brings more desensitization from the previous scene.

This is something that doesn't truly present itself fully during reading.

Not nearly the story it could have been

Loved the nrration, but sure got tired of hearing how hot everyone was. This had great potential but was sadly disappointing.
The main character lacked depth, there were random things added in that could have been poignant but didn't fit the story, and everything centered around a character who seemed obsessed with her sexlife.
There were some great conversations full of humor and snarky comments, but it wasn't enough to carry this story.

A Pretty Good Ending to a Series

I didn’t enjoy the third as much as I did the first two. I was pleased with her choice, but there were a lot of of unanswered questions at the end. I would’ve liked to know what happened to the other characters in the epilogue. Saskia did a tremendous job. I look forward to listening to more of her books in the future. Jennifer is one of my favorite authors.
