Description

Dark forces have extended Edward Wright an offer of incredible power at a terrible cost...and Edward has chosen to make them regret it.

When Edward is swept into the world of Ivalis as a Dungeon Lord, the Dark's most powerful servant, he has no servitude in mind. He'll oppose the evil plans of the Dark god, Murmur, whatever it takes.

Through only his wits and his guts to help him survive a weakened arrival, Edward must rise to power if he is to earn the right to live another day. But in the battle between Dark and Light, what can Edward choose if both sides are cruel, uncaring monsters? Cold gods laugh in the distant world of Ivalis. Heroes chase after power and experience, while Kings send their armies to their deaths in the name of the Dark and the Light.

But no one expects the rise of the Dungeon Lord.... And in the world of Ivalis, maybe a single man can forge his own path.

With the One Man Theater himself at the helm, joined by the sensational Annie Ellicott as two of the most disturbing monsters ever produced by Soundbooth Theater, we hope you never forget this horrifying LitRPG experience.

Over all too soon!!

I'll be honest here, I am beginning to listen to just about everything I can find that Jeff Hays records. The man is vocal monster, and his range is scary. DL sees him providing ever newer voices to his repertoire and th world is better for it. The man is a vocal monster, and I think his taste in choosing what to read is almost at the same level. I don't know how he picks his books, but I have never heard him narrate a dud. Annie Ellicot does a great job here, too. the pair work seamlessly together that is reminiscent of Old Time Radio Dramas, but much much better.

DL 1, looks to be like the first in a long line of books; I am happy to say. It has a great style, lots of humor, and a gross and terrifying monster to trouble our "evil" Dungeon Lord and his minions. Hugo keeps the book nicely paced, and it is always interesting. Additionally, it handles the "I live in a video game" troupe in a cool way. One of the things I really enjoy is getting to watch the main character level up, and I had to laugh when the MC complains that he hardly got any experience for killing a high level monster. The explanation he gets was completely justifiable, and not something you see in these LitRPG novels nowadays. The hero is clever, intelligent, and brave but not suicidal or stupid. He behaves in a logical and reasonable manner.

This is a great book, and I most highly recommend it to you. Go read it now, so we can get more of Lord Wraith's adventures.

A litRpg

This was a good book. One stranger to another it’s worth the buy. And will most likely quickly climb the ladder to become one of the top stories in its category. I think the narration was excellent and stayed consistent throughout the story.
The plot itself was believable enough.
What I really enjoyed was the different monsters and how the narrators used their studio to maximize the creepiness of each monster.
Buy it, love it.
There was one sex scene which wasn’t to much or to long and it’s a very very small portion of the book.
Excellent book

Adds Nothing New to the Genre

The writing feels young adult; which is fine. Content is a mixture of other recently written LitRPG books meshed together. Narration is good.

Not worth a credit in my opinion. Too short with fairly little content.

Enjoyed the book overall. Didn't feel that there is enough for the cost of the book.

story but the screeching was pretty unbearable

the screeching of the spider Queen is almost Unforgivable. Jeff Hayes does a good job but the story is a bit lackluster and has some Kinks.

Interesting

Like other reviews it take a while to pick up. about 4 and 1/2 hours in. the beginning was probably the best. The MC's situation and confrontation in the real world was believable, relatable, and I was cheering him on. the rest of the story picked up after the main setting and plot were thoroughly introduced.

I have a reason for rating the performance low. The most pressing issue I have is with the MC's voice. It sounds like Roswan from "The Land" (Check it out on Audible). If you don't know Roswan, imagine someone who grumbles all the time and mutters everything they say. His voice is so monotone it hurts. The times when he is danger accelerates the voice but it doesn't raise or drop octaves often.

Next is the Witch. Her voice is said to be like a vampire from an old Dracula film. Yet she is young and beautiful. For one, I can't imagine a young and beautiful woman attached to this voice easily. Two, it gets really old having to listen to a female Dracula complain 24/7.

Thirdly, the creatures. The echoing sound effects and other additions to the voices from the "Soundbooth" are unnecessary. the narration would be fine without them.

Lastly, the overall voices in the book provide a wide variety and show great skill as voice actors. I can admire this. I only wish that they chose more suiting/soothing/pleasant voices for characters we hear most often. I know for a fact Jefff Hays can do better.

TL;DR The book and story are great. However, the voices can be bothersome, depending on your tolerance. Would reccommend!

A LitRPG with a twist

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This is a funny story and a nice twist on the LitRPG genre. If someone asked me for a recommendation within the genre, I'd would mention this.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The narrator is easily the best part about this audio, capturing the humorous vein of the story, and providing a fun cast of voices. If I had to make one change, I'd cut out the constant stat readouts. I'm sure they're fine in the book where you can skim over them, but they disrupt the flow of the audio too much.

Which scene was your favorite?

The fight scene with the spider queen.

Could you see Dungeon Lord being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Nah!

bad echo

I was enjoying the story but I had to stop listening. I'm not sure if it was the equipment used but there is an awful echo that I just couldn't stand anynore.

👍

Not Bad. Not Outstanding Either

The main Character was a bit bland for my taste. Maybe I just don't get his motivations, but by throwing himself into combat, without regard for his companions over and over again, is pretty much what he hated about his former boss. Something I initially thought he would want to overcome. To prove himself better. Instead he just tries to screw over his new boss, all the while staying a victim without becoming a Hero. There seems to be no character-development in him at all (though his Minions do grow a little.)

The World Idea however does have potential. And I do see some seeds and structures that could become interesting if explored further. And the Ideas for the Enemys and Monsters were quite unique. If only because they had horns ^^

Jeff Hays remains one of my favourite speakers and the production quality of this audio-book is top-notch.
