Description
The governor of Colorado has commuted the prison sentence of Goldy Schulz's ultra-handsome, ultra-charming, ultra-venal ex-husband, Dr. John Richard Korman, otherwise known to Goldy as the Jerk. He's released, and soon afterward Goldy becomes the victim of threats, rumors, and violence.
Then there's a murder and suspicion centers on Goldy. Suddenly, she is faced with the challenge of running her successful catering business while fending off two persistent detectives.
Caught in a web of secrets and lies that can tear her family apart, Goldy must use all of her considerable powers of detection to find the real killer before she herself becomes a target.

I loved the book. However, I often found myself distracted by the sounds of the reader turning pages, rustling papers and making many unidentified noises. At one point I found myuself spending more time solving the mystery of what were the irritating background sounds than in solving the mystery ofwho killed the Jerk.

reader noise
Book is good, I enjoy this author's mysteries. However, the woman who reads this book makes noise between almost every sentence. It interferes with the enjoyment of the book. I would have rated the book 4 stars, but due to the mouth noises, just 3 stars.

I love the character, Goldy. BUT, I could not stand this reader. She made awful slurpping sounds,,,and she sounded so OLD. I cound not relate her to Goldy at all. In fact I wanted to stop listening because she made me think of Goldy as OLD,,,smacking sounds,,,gravely throat (smoker?) YECH!! Her voice reminds me of the old female doctor on the show Evergreen.
Wow! I realize how important the narrator is. I will be much more careful in my selections. If she continues to use this narrator,,I will read the rest in print.

Best plot yet in the series...
This is a pivotal installment in the culinary capers of Goldy...and the duo detecting of the first two ex-Jerk wives is funny and engaging, especially when Marla and Goldy respond in unison. The narrator's rendition of Sandee is very funny and apt. The plot itself is possibly the best yet in the series.
I want to address the negative comments in some reviews about the narrator. I do think a different type of microphone or recording method was used, which picked up more human or mechanical sounds that appear human, and obviously a good quality assurance plan wasn't applied. There are parts that should have been re-recorded because of this curious background sound. My solution was to turn down the volume a bit and the plot was so good I didn't let it detract. I feel Barbara does her usual stellar job and I honestly was not bothered--just aware because I had seen the reviews. When I first started listening to the series, I was startled by the narrator. I had read some of the books and grew up in Colorado, so I was expecting Goldy to sound, well, a bit like me. But I reminded myself she hailed from New Jersey. Barbara Rosenblat sounds like it and I have grown accustomed to her and feel she has great transitions to other characters, finely nuanced, especially voicing Tom. I am very particular about my narrator, and I, for one, would wholeheartedly recommend this Audible recording to any potential listeners. Again, the plot is enthralling--VERY well-written.

Please change narrator
When I found the next book in the series had the same narrator, I berated myself for not having written a review on this one and so came to see what others had said. I found that most agreed with my impression -- her voice doesn't fit my picture of Goldy, and was not pleasant to listen to for all the reasons others have listed. So why did they keep the same narrator???? I think I'll have to put on my glasses and actually "read" Dark Tort, though I don't know when I'll find the time! (P-L-E-A-S-E get a better narrator who sounds more like Goldy should!)

Narrator ruined this one...
I really WANT to give a higher rating to this book, but I cannot in good faith. I LOVE this series of books, but will read the rest IN PRINT, because the narrator almost ruined the series for me forever. She sounded so much older than I pictured Goldy to be and had an awful voice, that of a heavy, hacking smoker. (I had always pictured Goldy to be a bubbly, vivacious, Bette Midler type of gal, but not with this reader! And, yes, the slurping, sucking sounds made throughout the reading sidetracked me and annoyed me to where I almost stopped listening. Terrible narrator. Fix that and I may listen to future ones...
As for the tale, I normally find them action packed...this one was a bit "slow" in action...

Double Shot
The reader Barbara Rosenblat is very iritating to listen to as her exagerated style of reading makes you want to shut off the recording and listen to something else. It is unfortunate as many of the authors books she reads are definitely off my list of listens as I can't stand to listen to her reading of them.

Annoying Narration
The story was good but the narrators constant swallowing and slurping sounds drove me bonkers. I would give the story itself a four but the narrations is a one.

Such a tasty book
I love Goldy and hated the jerk. Loved this book and the recipes! I've got to go brine some pork chops now.
