À propos de ce contenu audio
Darlene was a small-town single mother from Arkansas. Bert was a preacher's son from Oklahoma. Both contracted polio as teenagers, leaving them with disabilities that would shape the rest of their lives. When they met at a rehabilitation center in 1952, neither could have imagined the journey ahead. Bert found hope in Romans 8:28 and believed that although polio was not good, God would bring good from it. Darlene later reflected that her trip to the rehabilitation center was "the one way for God to get me in the right place at the right time." Their love for one another and their faith in God carried them through the challenges of raising a family, building careers, and navigating an able-bodied world with disabled bodies. Together they learned to focus on what they could do rather than what they could not. Family members remember them as people who transformed adversity into opportunity and inspired those around them. "Critics wondered how Darlene, in a wheelchair, and Bert, on crutches, could ever manage. Outsiders looked at their weaknesses and predicted a brief marriage. They looked at each other's strengths and made a lifelong commitment. They learned to pool their strengths to accomplish necessary tasks." Dale, brother-in-law "They turned tragedy into triumph. While they held each other's hands, they never let go of the hand of Jesus." Dean, cousin Defying Disability is the true story of two polio survivors whose love, determination, ingenuity, and faith helped them build a remarkable life together.©2021 Dinah Jordan (P)2024 Dinah Jordan Christianisme Médecine Personnes handicapées Professionnels et universitaires Religion Vie chrétienne
