Instead, a barely coherent restauranteur appeals to him to find a missing cook and bring her back to New Orleans. Instantly taking a dislike for the man, Lee gets the impression that his true goal is to obtain a book she took with her when she vanished, using whatever means are required.
After visiting The Professor's bookstore and learning a few bits of folklore that may apply to the volume. Lee borrows a ramshackle car and begins scouring the adjoining parishes. What he finds is anything but reassuring.
