Description

The new Charles and Anna novel

Praised as "the perfect blend of action, romance, suspense and paranormal" (Rex Robot Reviews), the Alpha and Omega novels transport listeners into the realm of the werewolf, where Charles Cornick and Anna Latham embody opposite sides of the shifter personality. Now a pleasure trip drops the couple into the middle of some bad supernatural business....

For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles' role as his father's enforcer. This time their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way....

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae's cold war with humanity is about to heat up - and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

love the series but not this novel

this was my first bad experience with Patricia Briggs and with Holter Graham. Dead Heat was just too slow moving, I found myself increasing the speed of the narrator because it just moved slow. Based on my past experience with both author and narrator, I'm certain this was just a one time bad read for me... I've already started the next novel in this series and it's going good. For some reason, Dead Heat seemed to spend too much time in deep, slow dialogue... not enough on entertaining the reader.

Enjoyable story, easy listen

I always enjoy Patricia Briggs' book and I normally like Holter Graham's narration. Unfortunately he slightly changed the voice for Charles in this book and it was a disappointing change. Hopefully he will revert back to the way he initially performed Charles' voice for the next book in this series.

Charles and Anna have another fae to fight

I thoroughly enjoy all Patricia Briggs' books, and have a special liking for the Alpha and Omega series. This story moves to Arizona and, in addition to the evil fae plot, we learn more about Charles' background and meet his Navajo friends. Horses, Navajos, evil fae, children in peril, Arizona, Charles and Anna, and a look into Anna's heart's desire (in addition to Charles and his heart's desire)--what more can you ask from a book?

I gave the narration only three stars. The narrator reads well, but there was a rather nasal, breathy, flatness to much of it. I had a harder time "feeling" the characters in this one.

It can't get any better!!!

This is the best In the series thus far. The story was detailed with great insight into the Charles's past. I usually multitask when listening to a book, but this one reeled me in so often I would find myself just listening. Worth the credit and more.

Great book but not the best narration

I usually enjoy listening to Holter Graham's narration. This performance however was not one of his best. I had a hard time distinguishing between the male characters and the voices used for the children were just odd. The 4-year-old sounded more like a gruff old man than a little boy. That being said, this book is worth putting up with the few annoyances resulting from the performance.

Great addition to the series :D

4.5-5 stars

This was a great addition to the series. I love this series and love Anna and Charles and this story was another example of why I love them so much. TBH, I had a little trouble deciding between 4 and 5 stars but I found that I just couldn't rate it lower than 5 stars. I had 1 complaint about the story (noted below) but it wasn't anything too serious.

This story starts with Anna's birthday coming up and Charles is trying to figure out what to get her for her birthday. Around this time, Charles gets a call from an old friend, Joseph. Joseph is a very old friend (in his 80s now) who is the son of a werewolf that Charles knows. Unfortunately, Joseph won't let himself be turned into a werewolf and now he's an old man and soon to die. Joseph's family runs a horse breeding (and training) ranch in Scottsdale, AZ so Charles decides to take Anna down to visit his friend and to see about possibly buying her a horse. Unfortunately, almost as soon as Charles and Anna arrive, they get pulled into an issue involving a fae that is endangering children. They soon find themselves working with Leslie again (the FBI agent they worked with in book #3) as well as some CANTRIP agents, trying to find the culprit behind the fae magic. It's an interesting story and Charles and Anna have some difficult times to get past before everything is concluded. There is some sadness but things turn out pretty good in the end, allowing Charles and Anna to continue with their HEA.

I really enjoyed this story a lot. I really love Briggs' writing and I love how she writes Charles and Anna, they're just are such a great couple! I really liked the story but if I had one complaint about it, it would be that I wish there had been a bit more of the story focussed on Charles and Anna without the action plot providing distraction. It wasn't bad really but looking back on the story I do think that was slightly out of balance. Still, I really enjoyed this story a lot and loved the characters. I'd recommend this story. 2 thumbs up! :D

So Good

I always enjoy Patricia Briggs books. Charles and Anna books even more. This is a well-written book, that kept my attention and I couldn't stop listening until it was done.

Amazing Shifter World, Plot and Characters!

Patricia Brigg's stories hold a special place among my favorites! I love her Alpha and Omega series.

The world, characters and plot are well thought out and developed. Patricia has done a superb job developing a world full of werewolves, fae and other super naturals, and provides such rich details regarding pack dynamics, behaviors of dominate and submissive wolves, and magic, this world seems so real and tangible.

Anna and Charles are two of my favorite characters; however, I love Brother Wolf, he's fierce, loving and protective of Anna, it's too sweet!

One of the best shifter series that balances action, suspense, romance and the supernatural.

Graham's narration is great!

Great Book!

I really loved this story but found the narration to be annoyingly choppy throughout the book.

Not up to Patricia Briggs' usual high standards

I've come to expect a certain standard and flow to Patricia Briggs' novels, sadly, I feel this fell below her usual bar.
The story was good, not great, but my main problem is the extra long details and babbling about things in the story that I really didn't care about or feel were relevant enough to the storyline to go and on and on about.

The description and communication with the children was way over done imo, many of the things said just didn't match up with what children of those ages would normally say, the vocabulary and questions/statements the children said were quite a bit more mature for children of that age. Unless these kids are going to be a big part of the Alpha and Omega story moving forward, I feel way too much attention was given to them. I'm a proud parent of 4, but when I read/listen to these particular stories I'm trying to escape from kid stuff and delve deep into adult matters. The story would've been better if the kids' descriptions hadn't been so very detailed and their communication in the book had been dialed back by about half.

Also, I feel there was too many descriptors given on the horses. I don't want long detailed explanations of the barn, the different types of horses, what their financial worth is and to whom, etc; Again, if the descriptions on them had been dialed back by about half on most things, and the majority of their worth taken out, I feel this would've been a much better story.

Not enough attention to paid to the usual Alpha and Omega storyline, too much attention given to what I feel are background characters and info.

Schade - Schade - Schade......

Fesselnde Story, Sprache z.T. schwer verständlich
