Description
The new Charles and Anna novel
Praised as "the perfect blend of action, romance, suspense and paranormal" (Rex Robot Reviews), the Alpha and Omega novels transport listeners into the realm of the werewolf, where Charles Cornick and Anna Latham embody opposite sides of the shifter personality. Now a pleasure trip drops the couple into the middle of some bad supernatural business....
For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles' role as his father's enforcer. This time their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way....
Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae's cold war with humanity is about to heat up - and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

love the series but not this novel
this was my first bad experience with Patricia Briggs and with Holter Graham. Dead Heat was just too slow moving, I found myself increasing the speed of the narrator because it just moved slow. Based on my past experience with both author and narrator, I'm certain this was just a one time bad read for me... I've already started the next novel in this series and it's going good. For some reason, Dead Heat seemed to spend too much time in deep, slow dialogue... not enough on entertaining the reader.

✫✫ 5 Stars ✫✫
I think this might be my favorite book in the series! There was so much going on and so much sadness in this book but I loved the hunt and I loved the way it sometimes "takes a village". Seeing Charles a little different in this book made me happy too. I love Charles and I love his softer more emotional side even more. As each book progresses in this series, Anna and Charles become even better as partners in hunting the bad guys!!
Holter Graham was great as he always is in this series.

Charles and Anna have another fae to fight
I thoroughly enjoy all Patricia Briggs' books, and have a special liking for the Alpha and Omega series. This story moves to Arizona and, in addition to the evil fae plot, we learn more about Charles' background and meet his Navajo friends. Horses, Navajos, evil fae, children in peril, Arizona, Charles and Anna, and a look into Anna's heart's desire (in addition to Charles and his heart's desire)--what more can you ask from a book?
I gave the narration only three stars. The narrator reads well, but there was a rather nasal, breathy, flatness to much of it. I had a harder time "feeling" the characters in this one.

Enjoyable story, easy listen
I always enjoy Patricia Briggs' book and I normally like Holter Graham's narration. Unfortunately he slightly changed the voice for Charles in this book and it was a disappointing change. Hopefully he will revert back to the way he initially performed Charles' voice for the next book in this series.

It can't get any better!!!
This is the best In the series thus far. The story was detailed with great insight into the Charles's past. I usually multitask when listening to a book, but this one reeled me in so often I would find myself just listening. Worth the credit and more.

Good story but slow in a few areas. Not my fave
This is the first book in the series I wasn't impressed with. The story was good but could have been so much better had she not drug out some of the equestrian scenes & flashbacks that really weren't essential to the story. I actually fast forwarded thru some parts to get to the good stuff. I very very rarely do that & I read or listen to an exponential amount of books. If she had used that time to develop the main story then I'm sure I would have been blown away, yet again, by her story telling. However, this is still not by any means a "bad read."

Great book but not the best narration
I usually enjoy listening to Holter Graham's narration. This performance however was not one of his best. I had a hard time distinguishing between the male characters and the voices used for the children were just odd. The 4-year-old sounded more like a gruff old man than a little boy. That being said, this book is worth putting up with the few annoyances resulting from the performance.

Avid Mercy-verse Reader
This book was well written as her works all seem to be. Though, there was a lot of connections that were never made, things that seem to tie into other storylines but are left open. Reiteration of information as if it was not known is...disappointing.
As far as the overall idea of the book, it was fairly plain and lacked the depth I have grown accustomed to in her writing. I felt more engrossed in the story, characters, and world of Masques then this adventure of Charles and Anna.
Don't misinterpret my meaning, the book was good, I just feel like there was a lost potential. Maybe it is because there it a twist coming that we won't see coming. Maybe it was vague to get us all speculating. Maybe, as I have suspected in the past, Mrs. Briggs feels a stronger connection to Mercy then Anna. As a writer all these things are possible, as an artist any or all are possible. No doubt she will continue to create and amaze us all!

I wanted to love it
overall this felt like it was a short story made long. The narrator who normally dose a great job has some how lost his characters or changed style. I dont hate it but I wanted more.

Great addition to the series :D
4.5-5 stars
This was a great addition to the series. I love this series and love Anna and Charles and this story was another example of why I love them so much. TBH, I had a little trouble deciding between 4 and 5 stars but I found that I just couldn't rate it lower than 5 stars. I had 1 complaint about the story (noted below) but it wasn't anything too serious.
This story starts with Anna's birthday coming up and Charles is trying to figure out what to get her for her birthday. Around this time, Charles gets a call from an old friend, Joseph. Joseph is a very old friend (in his 80s now) who is the son of a werewolf that Charles knows. Unfortunately, Joseph won't let himself be turned into a werewolf and now he's an old man and soon to die. Joseph's family runs a horse breeding (and training) ranch in Scottsdale, AZ so Charles decides to take Anna down to visit his friend and to see about possibly buying her a horse. Unfortunately, almost as soon as Charles and Anna arrive, they get pulled into an issue involving a fae that is endangering children. They soon find themselves working with Leslie again (the FBI agent they worked with in book #3) as well as some CANTRIP agents, trying to find the culprit behind the fae magic. It's an interesting story and Charles and Anna have some difficult times to get past before everything is concluded. There is some sadness but things turn out pretty good in the end, allowing Charles and Anna to continue with their HEA.
I really enjoyed this story a lot. I really love Briggs' writing and I love how she writes Charles and Anna, they're just are such a great couple! I really liked the story but if I had one complaint about it, it would be that I wish there had been a bit more of the story focussed on Charles and Anna without the action plot providing distraction. It wasn't bad really but looking back on the story I do think that was slightly out of balance. Still, I really enjoyed this story a lot and loved the characters. I'd recommend this story. 2 thumbs up! :D

Schade - Schade - Schade......

Fesselnde Story, Sprache z.T. schwer verständlich
