A notorious decade-old murder draws a detective into a deadly conspiracy and the mystery of his own dark past in a shocking thriller by the award-winning author of Secret Identity.
Miami detective Pete Fernandez has settled into a comfortable routine of chasing deadbeat dads and cheating spouses when his partner, Kathy Bentley, shakes it up with a new client. A decade ago, narcotics officer Gaspar Varela was convicted of his wife’s brutal murder. His daughter, Maya, is still convinced he’s innocent. Pete and Kathy’s job? Prove it.
As they begin digging, they find a dangerous link to a ruthless gang of drug dealers and a new series of murders that signal a warning to Pete—step away or die. The investigation takes an even more dramatic turn when Pete discovers ties to a bloody political conspiracy that reaches back not only a half century to Castro’s Cuba but into the darkness of his own family’s tragic past.
To solve this case, and to navigate every violent twist to come, Pete must go to battle with Miami’s sordid history and the personal demons that still have the power to destroy him.
