Cujo is a 200-pound Saint Bernard, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. One day Cujo chases a rabbit into a cave inhabited by sick bats. What happens to Cujo, how he becomes a horrifying vortex inescapably drawing in all the people around him, makes for one of the most heart-stopping novels Stephen King has ever written.
"A genuine page-turner that grabs you and holds you and won't let go" (Chattanooga Times), Cujo will forever change how you view man's best friend.

Gut Wrenching, SOAP OPERA
IT WAS AMAZING HOW BAD YOU CAN HURT WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING PHYSICALLY WRONG
Like most King books, the characters are well written and fleshed out. I felt that the horror was minimal, barely even classifying this as a horror novel. The main theme revolved around a main character whose wife cheats on him. We are made to feel his humiliation and his hurt. I felt the hurt so much, that unlike him, I could not forgive his wife. Everything she did made me mad. King empathizes and tries to give a good excuse for her infidelity, but I felt the hurt so much that it did not work for me. Some may ask if I would have felt the hurt so much if it had been the other way around and to be honest I don't know. As a man, if your wife cheats, it makes you question, everything in your life. Most men's lives are so wrapped around masculinity and if they don't have that they have no worth, as a human. That may be right or wrong, but it is what society has made us. WEARING THE HORNS
GARY DIDN'T GIVE A SH IT.
King writes like a fisherman. He hooks you by getting you to care about his characters and than he reels you in by putting them in scary situations. Like most books there is plenty of pop culture from 1981 thrown in. King also seemed to be worried about getting older, as there are several references to it.
RAVER
I loved the narrator and thought she did a great job. Some others disagree. She was very dramatic, maybe for some, too much so. I know I got real tired of the four year old and his crying, yet it was very realistic of real life.

Bad narrator ruined a good book
I read this book years ago but didn't really remember it much. I probably should have stuck with a book on this one rather than the audible. The story was good, but not really my favorite King story. Hands down, The Stand is my favorite from King but more recently I have read "Lisey's Story " and "Bag of Bones" which I also really loved.
As others have mentioned, It was the narrator that really made me dislike listening to this book. Her voice was too old for the main character Donna who is supposed to be a young mother. I feel bad saying this but I felt like I was listening to an old woman who had smoked most of her life, it was rough and shaky. The most annoying part was her voice of Tad. It was too whiney, which I don't think was the impression I got from actually reading the book myself. This audible story could really use an update to the narration.
It will be a sad day when Stephen King stops writing. I look forward to more amazing stories from him.

Children's book?
Does the narrator think this is a children's book? The way she reads it brings to mind a librarian, dressed as a witch, reading books to children around Halloween. I can actually picture her holding the book so we can follow along and see the pictures. The story is great. Horrible but great. It doesn't deserve this stage narration.

Good story, annoying narrator
If you could sum up Cujo in three words, what would they be?
Suspenseful but slow-ish
What did you like best about this story?
My favorite thing was that Cujo had his own point of view. He wasn't a monster at all, really.
What aspect of Lorna Raver’s performance would you have changed?
I would have replaced her with someone less annoying. Her performance made me have less sympathy for the characters -- she made the main character seem wimpy and irritating and her Tad was a whiny, irritating child.
Who was the most memorable character of Cujo and why?
Cujo - he wanted to be a Good Dog and he WAS, until the rabies ruined his brain. I felt a lot of sympathy for him (more when I read the written version than I did with the audiobook)
Any additional comments?
It sure would be nice if Stephen King would narrate his own books. I may be picky because I saw that some people really enjoyed this narrator, but I just could not stand her.

Great Narrator
Good book, good narrator. Ignore Hubert's hypersexist "review". I'm really scared for people that assign gender or masculinity to a book.
That being said, I love King books that are from the pov of kids or animals, he has some empathy with them that makes the writing come out believable and superb. Highly recommended.

Just o.k.
This is one of those rare instances where I liked the movie better than the book. This story takes a long time to develop and has far too much backstory. I also didn't care for this narrator at all.

Plot as an Afterthough
Stephen King's greatest flaw was on display in this story:
Plot as an afterthought.
I love many King classics such as It, The Stand, The Shining, Salem's Lot, etc., but I haven't been able to read his latest books because the plotting is so horrendously slow. I quit halfway through Buick 8, Doctor Sleep, Cell, and Mr. Mercedes for this very reason. I thought it was a problem which only affected his more recent writings, but after attempting to read Cujo I realize the seeds for his plotting issues were always there. I quit halfway through Cujo, too.

Story: Not Bad. Reading: Horrendous!
This was not my favorite Steven King Novel. Maybe it's because there is no real supernatural aspect of it. There is a loose tie in to the dog and a dead serial killer, but it seems more like a side note and doesn't really have a purpose.
My real complaint is the reader of this book. She awful to the point of comedic. Her child's voice is going to haunt me for years because it is so grating. I honestly don't now how I made it to the end. I guess it's because I am a stubborn cheap bastard who hates to waste credits. My wife overheard me listening to this book and demanded I turn it off, just because of the lady reading it.

annoying reader!!
I just started the book. I don't want to finish because of her voice! I'll tough it out. Nevermind, it's too much!

For me: The wrong voice.
I love the story, but cannot say the same about the voice, unfortunately. I stopped hearing and go for a refund.

worst Stephen King book
narration was good. the story is boaring unfortunately. it lacks the foreard movement most King novels have. one often tires of the same thing happening over and over again. as with most King books convince works it way into the plot but instead of it being for the benefit of the characters King does it to prolong the already boaring and repetitive story. I like all of the King books I've listen this is the first I found to be bad.

One of Mr. King‘s best „short“ works
Paced very well. Tension throughout with very genuine human connections. More a story of genuine humans than his traditional supernatural stories.
Worth listening to!
