Description

Upon the ancient drysine moon/city of Defiance, the UFS Phoenix is being rebuilt, but her crew cannot do so in peace. Parren factions jostle for control of not only Defiance, but of the drysine data-core that Phoenix won at such an awful price. But the parren do not lay sole claim to that ancient knowledge, and within the bowels of the machine-city, something long-dead is awakening.

While aliens battle, Captain Debogande struggles to decide his next step. Human emissaries beckon him home, while a terrible new threat drives him toward the far edge of Spiral space. There live the croma, locked in a titanic struggle against the reeh, a species more terrifying than any yet faced by humanity. And holding perhaps the key to humanity’s salvation are a small force of freedom fighters, waging a hopeless battle against impossible odds, having waited a thousand years for just such a saviour as the UFS Phoenix....

Love this series!

The Spiral Wars is fast becoming my number one space opera series. Shepherd manages to maintain the pace and action without being predictable or repetitive while John Lee, by far my favourite narrator, does an excellent job of conveying the mood while maintaining a consistency of character voices.
If you start this series you’d better be sure to always have the next installment downloaded because you won’t want to wait when your current book ends.

A big universe just got bigger

This chapter in the saga of the Phoenix has quite a few revelations, and although the warship has been rebuilt to be more powerful than ever, there are foes out in the universe that have some surprises of their own. Styx's continuing evolution is front and center in this book, and it seems things are only going to get more complicated. The Croma and Reeh are some of the best alien races so far, and I love the world building. Also, I can't say enough good things about John Lee. Lee is the best military science fiction narrator in the business, and I love that he manages to maintain a consistent and recognizable voice for every character across five books worth of material.

Goood

As I listened it for the second time, I have to admit I enjoyed it much. Beeing not a native english speeker I still can not evaluate the book correctly, but it is one of the best - at least for me - I listened. In some passages I felt some slowdown of the action, but still it is very good piece of science fiction.

Not up to earlier books in the series

Biology just plain ignorant. Augments keep muscles at almost peak performance, then within 200 words the major's legs quiver like jelly. Author, please be consistent! We have gratuitous fight details that make segments three times as long as good writing would employ. Boring! Lastly, the author so telegraphed some of the plot that I knew what had to be coming 30 minutes to an hour before the story caught up to me. I hope the next one is much better.

A series that just keeps getting better!

This series keeps getting richer and richer with each book. Can't wait for the next one! John Lee has developed distinct and wonderful voices for each character.

Wish it was longer

Loved every minute of it. My boy John Lee was superb, as usual. Now I have to wait a year or more. *cry*.

book 5 of 500

It's clear now that Shepherd has no intention of ending this series... ever. This is a particularly dull installment, in which a new McGuffin and some new enemies are introduced. Political machinations abound, as do all manner of incidental descriptions of surroundings that fail to advance the plot. The Spiral Arm is large, so we know now that however many enemies Phoenix overcomes, there will always be more on the horizon. Lee is strained by the number of characters he must try to give distinctive voices.

Weak

Weak. Not what I have come to expect from this author. There just wasn’t much substance to this book. I felt like the author was milking me for some cash, while he tried to decide where to take series.

Nothing really happens

ok book I guess. But it felt like nothing really happened. the story did not move forward much. Maybe it sets the stage for the next book. But I feel done with this never ending book series.
