Description
The long-awaited first work of nonfiction from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a deliriously entertaining, wickedly intelligent cinema book as unique and creative as anything by Quentin Tarantino.
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.

A letdown I didn't see coming.
I've been a fan of Mr. Tarantino's since Pulp Fiction. He's very talented and can do something that few can do. His films are better than most, and some are better than others. After listening to the first chapter, and hearing Mr. Tarantino read his words with the passion for film we both share, I was all in. I couldn't wait for the next chapter. To my surprise, a new narrator began. I have nothing against Edward Ballerini, but he was just reading the words. Unlike Mr. Tarantino, which felt like he was just talking to you about his love of movies, and you can relate to that.
This is a complete bait and switch. Imagine if you were to go see Bullitt, and after ten minutes, Steve McQueen is replaced by Andy Griffith. I have nothing against Andy Griffith, but McQueen is the movie star. McQueen is the reason I wanted to see Bullitt. It's hard to continue listening to Mr. Tarantino's words read in a very clinical depiction. The words lose their power, their passion.
I want to be clear, this isn't a review of Mr. Tarantino's words, but the audiobook itself. I've already purchased the book and cannot wait to read it. My criticism is that this audiobook is a half-measure. It's difficult for me to say that because I think Mr. Tarantino gives it all in his films, writing, podcasts, and even the soundtracks he produces. If he wasn't able to narrate the entire book, he should have just scraped the project. This, unfortunately, feels like an obligation rather than a meaningful piece of work. And worse, Mr. Tarantino put his name on it.
Just to clarify, I stopped listening two-thirds through the second chapter and proceeded to scan the rest of the book to find out if Mr. Tarantino returns to narrating. He finally does. The last chapter. Very disappointing. I've never returned an audible back. Like most art (movies, music, and books), you go in with risks. You might like it or hate it, but that's what it's what's fun about experiencing art. This just feels like a cash grab. I would suggest staying away and just buying the book alone.

Speculating on Speculation
Me: So, Quentin, was it your intention not to narrate the entire book?
QT: Of course it was! I WROTE the book — you’re supposed to READ the book. This audio thing is lazy and cheating. I worked hard! You should, too. [Hey, take the “lazy” part out in the edit.]
Me: [Nodding yes, getting notes from Q] You’re such a gifted storyteller, I would have thought you’d have enjoyed narrating.
QT: I know, right? Usually you can’t shut me up. But it’s a long freakin’ book!! After 2 chapters I just knew, I am NO Stephen Fry. How does he DO that??
Me: Well, it was exciting to hear you tell a little of your story so we listeners are glad we got that much. How did you go about casting the narrator?
QT: That was all Audible. They said we got just the guy who’s not shy about the “F” word, rape, murder, or gallons of movie magic blood.
Me: What did you think about his performance?
QT: Ok, let’s not focus on what he’s not! He’s not me, never will be. Probably has only seen about 10% of the films I talk about. He has no opinion on Ali McGraw but the dude can read! He’s not supposed to be a personality. He’s a narrator. Yeah he’s me but he’s not me and not trying to be me.
Me: Do you think in time we’ll look back on his performance and think he’s being judged unfairly?
QT: I hope so. Let’s see if they like him in France.

Amazing book
Great book, not done yet but I love it so far. It should be noted that Tarantino only seems to narrate the first and last chapter. The other narrator isn't bad but Tarantino is perfect and I wish we had more chapters of him.

Complete let down
Despite having the book already, the only reason I purchased, was because I saw that the Tarantino himself was reading the book. Imagine my surprise when I find that was not the case after the introduction. It goes from an energy and enthusiasm to a bland monotone real quick. You could get whiplash from the kind of tonal shift they pull off here.
Wouldn’t recommend

NOT fully narrated by QT
I was expecting a full author reading. He starts off great with the first chapter but then someone else steps in until the end. I regret not grabbing the paperback. I can't enjoy books like these on audio unless they're completely read by the author. I don't care if they don't do it professionally and may sound a bit off, I like hearing the voice of the person that expressed the ideas being read.

That was righteous
QT devotes chapters to about 12 movies, gives deep analysis to about 50 other movies and briefly covers about 380 other movies. Not to mention his thoughts on numerous actors and directors. Great stuff

A lot of essays about films you've never heard of
This was fun for a while. It started off strong with his childhood and how meaningful film was in his life. But then it's just chapter after chapter reviewing films of which I've only seen two. Which is great for a few hours but incredibly tedious after that.

More Quentin, More
This book is amazing, though I docked it a performance star for Quentin not reading the whole thing. I will read it listening to anything where Quentin is talking about movies, and I hope this is the first in a long line.
