The reluctant hero born again!

This appears to the be the first book in the entire series from Black Library (according to the wikis anyways) - nice to see older titles getting the audiobook treatment.

There are two narrators (Penelope Rawlins is also present); one does Cain the other is the Inquisitor-friend who is editing his "memoirs."

Excellent performances, and the writing is what one would expect from a Cain novel: witty, self-aggrandizing, and very much the reluctant hero we expect from a Cain story (basically it is very entertaining to make a long story short - the writer does a stellar job).

Great book overall - if we see more Cain you will see more coin.

Finally, Ciaphas Cain comes to Audible!

it's wonderful that the Black Library is finally expanding on audible. The stories of Commisar Cain are legendary across the Segmentum and I've devoured every one in book form, going as far as to purchasing the hard covers when they were released. The narrators do a top notch job of capturing the characters personalities and foibles and I can't wait for the entire series to be released.

great for 40k beginners

Great for people just learning about the 40k universe as well as established veterans. All the flavor of 40k with a some lite to humour to keep it fun.

Please let there be more

Love the Cain books. The set up here was fantastic, especially how the footnotes were handled. Please tell me that more are coming!

More Cain! For The Emperor!

The Ciaphas Cain series is some of the best Black Library has to offer. Great book and a great series, very accessible to those just getting into the 40K universe. A mix of action and humor that is not the standard from 40K but is a very welcome change from the grim dark future(not that I don't enjoy the other books.) Hopefully they will continue this series in audiobook form, the rest of it is well worth a read/listen.

Just as Entertaining as I Remembered

Great experience, breezed through it in less than 3 days, without making an effort to. It just happened. Cain was due a re-read anyway, and this was an expedient and hugely entertaining way to go about it. It's been about 10 years since I last read For the Emperor, and I have to say that it was every bit as entertaining as back then, if not more so.

I hadn't heard much of Stephen Perring outside of audio drama appearances, but he nails Cain pretty well. What neither the Black Library site nor Audible tell you though is that he's not the only narrator - I was worried they'd have our Lady Inquisitor's annotations read by Perring as well, but they picked Penelope Rawlins for those, with Emma Gregory for some excerpts within the editorial notes. It truly was a perfectly handled adaptation.

I pray that they will be recording the rest of the series in the same way, and I'll buy them all.

Better than expected (and I expected alot!)

Having listened to several W40K before, usually by the epic speaker Toby Longworth, I'm seriously glad that Stephen Perring was reading this one. Perfectly fitting voice, with judt the right amount of exasperation and humor to illustrate the words being read.
I would have liked the footnotes of the female inquisitor to be read with a *slight* pause at the beginning though. Currently, she basically starts speaking the very MILLISECOND Perring stops. Puts me off a bit, but all in all is still well done.

I really hope the other books get an audio version as well.

cynical fun in the grim darkness of the far future

A great intro for people without much experience on 40k lore and a nice twist for everyone jaded by constant stife.

Warhammer 40k was always to bleak for me in book form, since everybody that is not a Ultramarine usually dies. Ciaphas gives the zealous mind of a Commissar a bit of believability even if none of his colleagues would admit to it.

Good sound production, VAs did a great job. My only gripe is, that at this point, there are not more CC books available on Audible.
