"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

    Not useful

I'm already learning Mandarin with a Chinese friend and this is a poor book for learning. The lesson jumps all over the place, and doesn't teach you how to speak as much as imitate bits of a conversation you will likely not remember.

    waste of time and money

There is literally nothing to this. It is an absolute waste of time and money. If you are looking to actually learn to speak Mandarin, Learn Mandarin Chinese with Paul Noble and Next Steps in Mandarin Chinese with Paul Noble are the way to go as he teaches you sentence structure, vocabulary and grammer in natural layers all why he demystifies the tonal system and explains the literal translations in a way that enables further learning down the road. And unlike unlike Pimsleur both of Paul Nobles titles on Audible are the complete courses so you get alot of bang for your buck. I can't believe I shelled out an entire credit for what was basically one simple introductory lesson. And, on top of everything else it was BORING!!

It would help if they told you the pinyin spelling

It's an overall great approach however when it's very hard to discern exactly what sound is being made by the speaker errors are introduced when you don't know the spelling of the transliteration. For this reason people have published transcripts online however they have been sued by the maker of this book and forced to take those transcripts offline

This is a great way to start a new language

As someone with ADHD. I decided to learn as I ran a few miles rather than listen to music. I've read a few books about Mandarin but honestly couldn't focus we'll enough. Not any more!
