Constant melodrama ruins a promising story
I really liked Children of Blood and Bone. I even pre ordered this title because I liked it so much. but this volume was so miserable and convoluted that I am sorely disappointed.
No character in this book is consistent. Every once in a while one of the main characters will lose their mind and act completely out of character just to fuel the constant misery and melodrama that saturates the entire story. No character is immune to making angry out of character snap decisions that ruin everything. A certain POV character basically has a hole in his head where information spills out; he is incapable of critical thinking because if he used his brain most of the useless tragedies in this book could have been avoided.
The whole book seems to be an exercise in misery. Almost constantly horrible things are happening in this book and characters are constantly suffering from one scene to the next with VERY small moments of peace peppered in. These horrible things don't feel necessary to the story, they feel like they're just happening because the author wants the book to be dark and melodramatic as possible. If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be "angst".
Every time you think something positive is going to happen, it is ripped away. This happens so often over the course of the story that it becomes boring and predictable. I didn't need to think very hard to know what was going to happen next. The structure of the story is basically this: characters do something. oh no! everything is ruined and we're very sad. characters try something else. oh no! everything is ruined and we're very sad. Rinse and repeat for 13 hours. Children of blood and Bone had this structure too, but at least it made sense in relation to the story.
This book also has an extremely unsatisfying conclusion. I don't think I'll be picking up the next one.

Really Sad
I LOVED "Children of Blood and Bone." Could hardly wait for this sequel. Seven chapters in, and I'm bored senseless, and cringing at the absurd and predictable story line. "...Blood and Bone" began with tension...a fight scene that escalated into more tension, relaying the divisiveness that drives the story line, with layers of ironies, intricate details and twists. Conversely, "...Virtue and Vengence" begins with this same fiery protagonist, now a weepy narrator, bemoaning her situation. The story then plods along, with an actionless narrative, minus intense and descriptive plot surprises designed to hold the reader's interests.
A glimmer of hope arises at the onset of Chapter 7, but it is soon snuffed out, via a predictable story occurence, which dims all hope of the story mystery and allure being resumed.
Unfortunately, I will return this audiobook before completion. I prefer remaining content with fond memories of Book 1 "Children of Blood and Bone," rather than ruining my entire impression of this initially-inspiring story.

it's okay
I have never wanted to pull a character out of the pages and smack them as badly as I wanted to smack Zeile. Petulant is the only word that comes to mind.
The story is mediocre. I'm hoping it's just the curse of the middle book and the next will be great.
The narrator is incredible!!! Her pronunciations of the Yoruba is perfect! She deserves some serious accolades for her performance!!!

Rich and Unique Storytelling, but this time around I was left with more questions than answers
**Spoilers**I fell in love with with first book in the series and preordered this second installment with much excitement. It didn’t quite measure up to the original, but it’s still a pretty good story and the performance was excellent.
Pros:
Action packed
Fast paced
Rich world and culture
Rowan’s character development
Cons:
There was little character development for the two female lead characters and I felt their decision making showed little growth. They often made the same mistakes without rhyme or reason.
Zane has no voice—it would be nice to get his perspective.
Felt like certain characters, like Mazelie, were forced on the reader and their development was shallow at best
Could’ve used a brief reminder of the different kinds of Magi—what their powers were since it’s been a while.
There was never an explanation as to how Nahanda or other Titan were able to do what they did with their magic that the Magi could not. It felt like a made up “ability” to propel the story forward
In the end, I look forward to the next book in the series, but if it leaves me with more questions than answers (the way this book did), that might be the end of it for me.

Seriously? Bahni Turpin narrates this?!!!
It is quite ridiculous that Audible has allowed Bahni Turpin to narrate this follow-up book. RIDICULOUS!!! Her rendition of a western African accent and pronunciations of Yoruba phrases are incorrect and often times change the meaning. I wonder if the author, Tomi Adeyemi, samples this audio narration. It sounds like rubbish! Bahni Turpin does a decent narration job on other works, I truly do appreciate her skills, but she is the wrong person to narrator this work. At best, the accent she taps into sounds more southern African than western. And her Yoruba skills are nonexistent. This narration job should have been given to a better trained narrator that is skilled in Yoruba intonations and familiar with western African accent. This work is one of the worst audios I’ve ever listened to.

Disappointed
The first book was great. This one is a struggle to get into and by the time you do every character becomes horrible. The only saving grace I'd the narrator.

PLEASE GET ANOTHER READER
I love this series, I really do. But it is so painful listening to this narrator butcher every Yoruba word, name, phrase and passage. It’s actually worse than the way she read the first book. I don’t understand why Audible would have someone that already has a very notable (South African?) accent narrate a book that is specifically Nigerian with so much Yoruba. I missed so many parts of this book due to the terrible butchery of her pronunciation

Book 1 was better book 2 still good
It was slow in the beginning but picked up pace towards the middle. I wasn't as invested in their lives as I was in book 1. But boy oh boy there will be a book 3. Now I'm curious all over again.

Loved it!!
Intense from the start, great continuation of the first book! Omg I felt every emotion in this story and performance was spot on. I listened to it twice back to back, that's how good it is to me. I can't wait for the nxt book!!

Fantastic
This is the great second part of a fantastic series. I can't wait for the third one! And, the audiobook production is really good, it's read in a way that makes you feel like you're a part of the story. Highly recommended!

Children of hurt trauma and vengeance
Children of trauma,vengeance and lack of virtue is what I would call the 2nd book of the children of blood and bone series. I find that it had too much of a focus on the traumatic events the characters were going through and sheer senselessness in their Actions. The storyline didn't roll as smoothly as in the first book but nonetheless I liked how certain characters redeemed themselves! Bahni Turpin almost does too much of a good job and heightens some of the dreadful situations the characters go through, sometimes irritating me and leaving me at the edge of my seat with heart palpitations lol.
But even though I had less fun listening to this book I still think that we need books like this about black people, living, going on adventures, hurting, loving, fighting and just being human and black narrators who tell these stories.
With that said it's still a good read and worth praising!
