    Description

The number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy returns with an electrifying tale of friendship, betrayal, and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a small Mississippi town.

When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow.

His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington. More disturbing still, Marshall’s high school sweetheart, Jet, has married into the family of Max Matheson, patriarch of one of the families that rule Bienville through a shadow organization called the Bienville Poker Club.

When archaeologist Buck McKibben is murdered at a construction site, Bienville is thrown into chaos. The ensuing homicide investigation is soon derailed by a second crime that rocks the community to its core. Power broker Max Matheson’s wife has been shot dead in her own bed, and the only other person in it at the time was her husband, Max. Stranger still, Max demands his daughter-in-law, Jet, defend him in court.

As a journalist, Marshall knows all too well how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Without telling a soul, he joins forces with Jet, who has lived for 15 years at the heart of Max Matheson’s family, and begins digging into both murders. With Jet walking the dangerous road of an inside informer, they soon uncover a web of criminal schemes that undergird the town’s recent success. But these crimes pale in comparison to the secret at the heart of the Matheson family. When those who have remained silent for years dare to speak to Marshall, pressure begins to build like water against a crumbling dam.

Marshall loses friends, family members, and finally, even Jet, for no one in Bienville seems willing to endure the reckoning the Poker Club has long deserved. By the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

I wanted a Thriller not a rant about Trump

I wanted a Thriller/Mystery not a rant on Trump. I read (listen to Audible) as an escape, not to hear more about the political climate.

    I quit after 10 chapters

My first ever negative review. This was one of the free monthly offerings. I paid too much.
The performance is a bit sub par, over-acted, but that's probably a matter of opinion. The story was somewhat interesting so I tried to power through. When it got political, I gave it up. We get enough of that, yes? I know I couldn't do another 40 chapters.

Keep Politics Out - Ruins Story

Good story but could not believe the politics that were thrown in that add nothing. Author forgets not all believe as he does.

    Whiny...typical 2019 victim-hood tripe

The reader is very good at imitating the main character's pathetic story. However, at the two hour mark, it is still the main theme. Who knows how long that will go on??? This is an author I won't bother to read again.

    odd contradictions

couldn’t reconcile the various contradictions in plot. Pushing that aside, this was mostly an anti capitalist anti trump rant.

    Trump basher

I read hundreds of books and audiobooks a year. It’s rare for me to write a review. I would’ve appreciated knowing that this book was going to bash our president before I purchased it. Generally I enjoy his books, but it was disappointing to discover that this was a major topic in the story. I returned the book after getting through about 1/2 hour of the audiobook.

    Political nonsense

Like so many contemporary authors, Iles can’t just write an entertaining novel. He has to insert his political views in ham-handed attempts to make them seem part of the plot. If you’re a progressive, enjoy the book. All others, skip the lecture. Why an author would alienate half his audience is beyond me. Maybe he hopes you’ll buy before to realize what he’s up to. Hopefully, this review will save you some money and hit his wallet.

    Too Bad Politics Were Included

Complex plot that moves nicely, though the handful of negative references on the POTUS added nothing to the story and lost me as a Greg Iles fan.

    Good, but

Not good enough to listen to the authors endless whining about Trump and his Russian conspiracy theories.

Please, enough of this political tripe!

After three hours of listening I was sufficiently overcome with the author's politics that I gave up. My hope was that his protagonist would eventually overcome his victim-hood and further, see his Trump derangement syndrome for what it was, but clearly this wasn't going to happen. Perhaps this was intended to portray the effects of his protagonist's DC journalism experience but I've come to the conclusion that the opinions are those of the author.
Politics aside, the first three hours of this tome were so dreary that I felt I couldn't slog through the remaining 21. I'm asking for a refund as I buy Audible books for entertainment or enlightenment and this book doesn't seem to offer either.

    Endlich wieder packend!
