From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Description
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America.
In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.
An annotated edition of Can’t Hurt Me, offering over two hours of bonus content featuring deeper insights and never-before-told stories shared by David. Not available in other formats.

Not sure it sets the right example
Kuddos to Goggins for overcoming all the challenges and there’s something one can learn from his story. But it’s really dangerous to give an example of pushing yourself so hard without 1.sorting your psychological traumas and 2. Not letting your body recover/rest. I agree that we should all get out of our comfort zone and push ourselves to develop and become better. Taking it to extreme worked for him but might be lethal for others. Story was ok, very repetitive.

Motivational, but at a cost
Here are my three take-aways from "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins:
David Goggins is an impressive man, and has achieved things that only the uncommon of the uncommon could do-he lives to be unique. Goggins is a type A, high-achieving, resume- focused individual. He has utilized his genetics and optimized his body and mind through repetition. He used his dark past, insecurities, and competition to fuel his many endeavors. However, I believe everything in life is a trade-off. David chose to take a path focused on physical milestones by proving he was psychologically "hard". By doing so, he worked harder rather than smarter, and forewent so many other important aspects of life.
I couldn't help but notice how underprepared Goggins was going into things. He never had the right bike, the right shoes, the right food/salt/gels-in fact, he ate crackers and hamburgers during some of his races and pull-up comps. He tormented and tortured himself, and takes pride in it today. A lot of those scenarios in which he suffered were preventable. The rash on his wetsuit, the bendy pull-up bar, the running shoes on a snow-packed trail...I just find it a little ludicrous and embarrassing. He shouldn't have worked out before a 100 mile race, he should have known to stretch as an ultra-marathon runner. It's just kind of stupid. But it adds to his hardship that he is so proud of.
From a critical point of view, Goggins forfeited family, love, appreciation, and belonging to achieve. There was never balance or appreciation until his life was almost taken from him. I value achievement highly, but it was hard for me to hear him talk about his life on the audiobook. He cheated throughout school, cheated in buds by stealing the itinerary, and took a disgusting amount of pain meds to get through several obstacles. What I heard was a man lacking peace, lacking understanding, and lacking human connection. In my opinion, Goggins needs to sit down and have a slice of humble-pie. He seemed so unsatisfied, so uneducated-filling every other word with swear words, and quite narcissistic. I don't recall very many examples where he was thankful for his genes, body, ex-wives and mother (who were there every step of the way), friends, or mentors. Each person is a unique blend of nature and nurture, and I know he had one of the hardest lives growing up. I value his growth mindset, just think it was hyper-focused on a single area in life-physical achievement. And that comes at a cost.
The major things that I would like to apply to my life is the governor-we should remove unnecessary limitations, do things that suck, or change the way we perceive challenges. I do believe in the 40% rule, and assume there is an unfathomable amount of unfulfilled potential in me, and in those around the world. So I will do my best to callous my mind each time I do something challenging, and do things that are hard because they are hard, and because it will set me apart in the world. All in all, it was a fantastic and motivating book, but the dude's only human, as are we.

I'M A 60 YR OLD WOMAN AND LOVE THIS BOOK!
I WAS CURIOUS AS TO WHETHER I WOULD GET ANY MORE FROM DAVID'S BOOK THAN I HAD ALREADY GOTTEN FROM ALL THE PODCASTS AND OTHER INTERVIEWS I'VE LISTENED TO. WELL THIS BOOK GOES WAY MORE DEEPLY INTO WHAT MOST GOGGINS' FANS ALREADY KNOW OF HIS LIFE AND SOME!
I MENTION MY AGE IN THE HEADLINE IN CASE THERE ARE OTHER OLDER PEOPLE, AND WOMEN IN GENERAL WHO WONDER IF A BOOK ABOUT THE LIFE OF THE HARDEST MAN ON EARTH HAS ANYTHING IN IT FOR THEM.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AN ALPHA MALE, SEAL TEAM WANNA BE, TO GET SOMETHING FROM THIS BOOK. IF YOU ARE INSPIRED BY PEOPLE WHO GET KNOCKED DOWN BUT GET BACK UP AGAIN - OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN THEN YOU CAN APPLY HIS LESSONS TO ANYTHING IN LIFE ! THIS MAN HAS GONE DEEEEEEP INTO SELF REFLECTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY AND ARTICULATES WHAT HE HAS LEARNT, AND HOW HE HAS TURNED WEAKNESSES INTO STRENGTHS BEAUTIFULLY WITH BRUTAL SELF DEPRECATING HONESTY. I'VE READ MANY BOOKS IN THIS GENRE AND I'VE NEVER FELT THIS LEVEL OF RAW HONESTY.
FROM DAVID'S PODCASTS I'VE LEARNT SO MUCH ABOUT THE MENTAL STRENGTH WHICH I'VE USED FOR RUNNING MARATHONS (I HAVE GOGGINS'ED MY WAY THROUGH SEVERAL RACES!) - BUT READING HIS BOOK HAS CHALLENGED ME TO LOOK AT OTHER AREAS OF MY LIFE WHERE I COULD BENEFIT BY GETTING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.
FINALLY, WITH THE PODCAST CHATS IN-BETWEEN CHAPTERS YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE IN THE ROOM WITH WITH DAVID AND ADAM, HAVING THE BOOK READ TO YOU THEN DISCUSSING THE CHAPTER WITH DAVID AT THE END. BRILLIANT FORMAT FOR AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY !!!

This guy will change your life!
I first heard about David Goggins through Joe Rogan’s podcast. I’ve listened to his interview with him at least a dozen times. Through following David Goggins on social media, I learned he was writing a book. After much anticipation, the audiobook is finally out! I’ve already pre ordered my kindle copy from Amazon once the book is officially released dec, 4. I have no doubt that this audio version will be on repeat. This guy has put so many mantras in my head that constantly motivate me to “get after it.” I’ve even considered getting a tattoo of “uncivilized” (something that David explains) somewhere on my body to always remember to be unstoppable and be hungry for more. I hope his words will inspire you to find out something you don’t already know about yourself. They have for me. David, if you’re reading this, thank you! You’ve certainly made an impact on my life!

Self Worship Is An Understatement
I admire the effort David Goggins has put into his endeavors. I am glad that he overcame everything in front of him. I think he has some good stories, but to say the book is self worship is an understatement. Maybe that type of self aggrandizement is helpful for some listeners, but honestly it became tiring half way through. I begrudgingly finished the Audible because I was so motivated by the book to push through torture. Thanks David.

STAY HARD
Goggins is one of a kind. There is no one better at helping you understand how to maximize your potential, how to not limit yourself, how to get and stay hard. I will read/listen to anything involving Goggins and have been waiting for this book since it was announced.
If you’ve heard/read about “Living with a Seal” David Goggins is the unnamed Navy Seal in that book. Now you can finally hear his full story.
Get this without thinking twice.

Overcoming all obstacles
I liked the format of this audio book. It combines Mr. Goggins himself, Mr. Skolnick, a narrator/collaborator, Mr. Goggins’ autobiography, his self analysis, a podcast format, and guidance for readers who wish to improve their lives. The interaction between Mr. Goggins and Mr. Skolnick adds a fresh element to the entire presentation. Clearly Mr. Goggins has confronted and overcome significant obstacles in his lifetime and can serve as an inspiration to all of us. That said, not everyone will feel the need to take self improvement to the nth degree, as did Mr. Goggins. I was somewhat put off by his drive to compete constantly. It didn’t seem like Mr. Goggins’ striving to be the best left much time for a personal life. But his path doesn’t apply to everyone, though aspects of it surely do. The story of his life still has much value for readers and listeners. I’m glad I listened to his book.

I wanted to love it
I really did not enjoy the reading/podcast format, actually i hated it. It took away from your ability to immerse yourself in the story and the events happening in the moment. There is no doubt that David Goggins is a tough MFer, but for me, someone writes a book like this to give something more than just their story. It felt like a money grab, like someone went back and fucked around with the book to sell it more. There wasn't much substance to it beyond some really sad, some really tough and frankly some really dumb stories. No offense, but who does a 100 mile race completely unprepared and ends up pissing blood and hospitalized? That is not mental fortitude, it is not inspiring, it's just dumb. I would have left that story out. There is no doubt that David Goggins survived a tough childhood and adolescence and he made something better of himself. For that and for his Service, he deserves props. Overall, this book is a good story of perseverance, overcoming difficulty, etc., so if you need a pump me up kinda book, than this is for you. Beyond that there wasn't a lot of depth or actionable content, just some weak attempts guided by hashtag suggestions. I didn't hate his story, but the book just felt a little dishonest in its delivery.

Sprecher super, Sprache furchtbar

Interesting and entertaining with a new concept
What I really liked about this audio version of the book was the concept. Not just read in a typical way, the whole experience of the book was pleasant and entertaining. It was a good choice to let Adam read from the book because I don’t think David’s voice is suited for it. But having his insight on the different stories of the book was very cool and a refreshing experience in listening to an audio book.
The book itself was a good one with nuggets of wisdom one can take away and really understanding that hard work can take you anywhere. David doesn’t sugarcoat any of his experiences which is something I appreciate. The only thing I personally did not like was that after some chapters the stories felt a little repetitive - David accomplished a lot in his life but it felt a little bit like listing them. What kept me listening was that I knew he would shine a light on what he learned during those experiences and these were the important parts.
All in all I would recommend this audio book to anyone interested in having an example of what you can accomplish when you put your mind to it. Also, you need to like stories about the military.

Uncomfortable volume
The speakers volume is constantly much higher than David's and that just hurts. Especially when you have to turn the volume up for David cause of background noise and then the speaker screams in.. That's very bad.

Awesome story or just an imposer?
Truth is the story is real. He had a bad childhood, became a cheater and fatty but was able to recover and be a seal that runs ultra marathons.
This is somehow amazing, especially the seal training with the hell weak and badwater ultra marathon. How is a person able to get up every day and endure 16hours of sport just to do the same the next day?
But does he maybe just have psychological problems that he still has not solved? Why does he need to tell everybody how great he is over and over even if he argues that this is not what this book is about?
How can anyone be so sadistic to cause so much pain to one owns body each day and all the time during his mid twenties to his forties?
For sure he might be also rich now, but did he ever work his but off to be successfull in a job? When you look at his story its all about training the body and enduring physical pain. There is no brain required. He had choices, also as a child and decided to become a cheater. Yes there are people that end up worse but also that end up better.
All these points make me somehow refuse this book although his story might be quite interesting. But maybe it would have been better in another format, especially because it contains a lot of repetition. Over and over.

What an amazing audiobook!
I really enjoyed this audiobook a lot. Especially because David Goggins himself comments on every chapter like on a podcast. Mind blowing book. I rarely write testimonials but this is just a masterpiece.
