    Editors Select, October 2017

Andre Aciman's critically acclaimed novel may finally be stepping into modern classic status, having recently emerged from relative obscurity due to the upcoming movie release starring Armie Hammer. And its place in the literary canon is well deserved, depicting perfectly the infatuated experience of first love (I won't say "feeling" because the picture Aciman paints is not a singular "thing" - it's very much a journey through obsession). The story is beautiful, erotic, and feels firmly rooted in human truths (and will make you blush). But what makes it truly worthy of listening to - and why it's my pick for October - is THAT voice. Armie Hammer's narration is among the best I've ever experienced. —Emily, Audible Editor

A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year

A Washington Post Best Fiction Book of the Year

A Chicago Tribune Favorite Book of the Year

Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy. André Aciman's critically acclaimed debut novel is a frank, unsentimental, heartrending elegy to human passion.

More praise for Call Me By Your Name:

"Hammer’s soft, velvety voice lends itself perfectly to the story and its Italian setting. While you might think this one isn’t worth a listen if you’ve already seen the movie or read the book, many reviewers say it is still worth taking in even if you know the story - some even say it’s worth listening to more than once." A touch of summer

It’s beautiful how Armie Hammer’s voice as it reads these beautiful words can make time flies and bring you to Italy, to sunlight, into the sort of evocative transe only beautiful stories can conjure up. I have read this book but to hear it is something else. I understood it better, it touched me, all its subtleties laid bare in sounds for my ear to find. It was so, so beautiful!

    Unique and beautiful novel

This story teared me apart. It was so relatebale and so far from what I ever experienced at the same time. The narration by Amir Hammer is delightful and help to get fully into this feeling storm.

Rip my heart out, why don't you?

Reviewing books is always tricky because I always ask myself "where do I begin" and "how do I translate my emotions into words after so many words anyway?" I'm ashamed it took me so long to start "Call Me By Your Name" and now that I've finished it I want to listen to it again immediatly. On the other hand, I'm really not sure my heart could handle being shattered by all of the gorgeous evocative sentences one more time. I don't think the story needs much introducing by now, so all I'll say is that this is one of the most beautiful books I've read in my entire life. Armie Hammer's voice couldn't have been more magnetic if it could, and he served André Aciman's poetic prose beautifully. "You'll kill me if you stop." Don't stop. Or do. Yup, that's exactly it.

    Just a wonderful time

I read the book last summer and I already fell in love with it. But listening to Armie Hammer's voice is like a sweet dream. He gives so much emotions to the story, that you could spend the day listening to him. It is superb.

A Very Relevant Complement to the Movie

Though certainly not earth-shattering, this novel is incomparably superior to the movie made in 2017.

    This, for many reasons:

    - the novel is entirely narrated from Elio’s point of view, what provides coherence to the plot while maintaining mystery around Oliver;
    - the epilogue is much more detailed, and the very essence of the conclusion is different from the movie’s, the novel ending with the work’s title and giving it true meaning;
    - what Elio describes as the « best night in his life » in the novel is completely absent from the movie!
    - there is no mumble-jumble of languages in the written work and although the novel was written in English, everyone is understood to be habitually speaking Italian.

Given the author’s biography and the fact he identifies the novel’s location only with the initial B, it can be interpreted as autobiographical. No doubt, with embellishments were made as many details appear highly unrealistic.

Those who have seen the movie will benefit greatly from the novel. Those who have not may abstain without great loss.

Aciman plays with words so naturally it is a pleasure to read him. And listening to Hammer's voice is like drinking a good warm chai tea latte.

Stunning and deep dive into infatuation

This story has Virginia Woolf's stream of consciousness and Walt Whitman's sensuality combined in what is probably the most beautiful book I've read this year.

    Absolutely spectacular!

My goodness. A simple story beautifully told. I found myself often rewinding to the start of a chapter or passage to hear Armie Hammer read André Aciman’s glorious writing once again so I could savor the words and phrasing. I really didn’t want it to end.

    Crying in public

That’s what the ending of this book had me doing. Crying in the middle of a restaurant, and immediately on the last words as read by Armie Hammer, rewinding to hear the last few minutes all over again. Then I wrote a love poem to my husband. Great book! Great performance.

    sooooo boring

I only got it because of the great reviews, and I've had such a hard time staying with it. I had to rewind the first 30 minutes over 10x. it honestly even got me in a bad mood how slow this book is. the first 30 minutes are ridiculous like get to the point already!!! it almost put me to sleep several times. after about 3 hours I officially give up and only wish I can take my credit back! and it has nothing to do with the gay guys. I'm gay myself but jesus this book is horrible! the amount of good reviews is very surprising!!!

    Profound sensuality~

An absolutely beautiful, daring and complex novel! Aciman's economy of style is at once direct and poetic. He handles a controversial subject with such sensitivity, frankness and unabashed romanticism that swoons at every turn. Armie Hammer's rich baritone, and elegant reading is superb. I will return to this again and again.

    Seriously disappointed

I'm a gay man who saw, and enjoyed, the movie. When I saw there was a sequel: "Find Me", I decided to listen to the book, then moving on to "Find Me". But that's not going to happen!

The book is very well written with creative, enjoyable prose that creates great images but the story is a cloyingly romantic fantasy containing mostly two-dimensional characters who mindfuck themselves silly, OMG get over yourselves?

The story just doesn't hold up, it's so melodramatic, in a silent movie kind of way and gets worse the farther you get to the end.

It doesn't help that the characters are not very likable in the book, and I can't even imagine such over the top romance between two men, and one that lasts a lifetime. Men are not by nature romantic, certainly not to the degree these two were.

I was struck by the gratuitous hetero side story: our teenage romantic bedding local girls and the manfriend redeeming himself by promptly redeeming a marrying a siring a brood if kids, leaving all this behind, or not; I couldn't quite figure out was up when they met 20 years later; where they still in love, were they ever in love? Who knows.

I really wanted to like this book!

I heard such good things about the movie, that I wanted to read the book for myself. When I started listening, I found that the main protagonist, Elio was miserable and unlikable. Compound that with the book being a definite "slow burn", it made it hard to finish. Throughout the story Elio was consistently passive aggressive, selfish, manipulative, jealous, and creepy. He mopes around for the majority of the book and comes across as very pretentious. Which made his lengthy inner thoughts hard to tolerate. He was honestly the worst. The narration was very good, but unfortunately I did not enjoy the story at all

    Equal parts beautiful and heartbreaking

This story is both beautiful and heartbreaking. “Call Me By Your Name” is one of the most incredible novels to have ever written. This love story about Elio and Oliver will touch your heart and then break it into a million pieces. This is one of those novels and stories that will stay with you for the rest of your life. “Call Me By Your Name” is not only a brilliant masterpiece of LGBT literature, but it is also one of the greatest romance and coming of age stories to ever be written.

A. Aciman beherrscht Worte wie kein anderer.
Keine Ahnung- keine Lust auf was anderes. Auf zur dritten Runde!

    Cor cordium, heart of hearts.

This book means either the world to you or nothing - there wont be anything in between.
If you are one of the lucky ones - it will grab you as deeply as words can reach and fare beyond that point - and never let go again.

Well as you may have guessed, i belong to the lucky ones.

I am aware of that this is may not a useful objective criticism,
well, - I am not a book critic - but a reader, so please forgive me.

    Later.
