Masterful

Dan Abnett strikes gold yet again - introducing us to some of the most believable, endearing, and HUMAN space marines in the Warhammer World. Hard to believe this is his first time writing Space Marines! Perfect for fans who prefer smaller squad-focused space marine novels. An excellent choice for Abnett fans. I love the Eisenhorn novels, but I think I actually like the Snakes even more!

Dan Abnett does it again

A unique space marines chapter gets a unique book written about them as we follow the leader of an elite squad of space marines through several deployments. Normally we only see a single mission in most 40k novels, while in this we get to see more of a "day in the life" take. And as a result, it makes for a very fast read/listen. And an entertaining one at that. It has a "stylised" feel to it I can't fully explain. There came a point while listening to this where everything being described seemed like something out of a kick-@$$ Genndy Tartakovsky animation, which I then started to imagine, and that made it even more awesome. But the fact that Dan Abnett wrote this should be enough of a reason to check this book out. My only complaint is that we don't get more of a feel for the entire squad, instead focusing more on their leader and their apothecary. This leads to the rest of the squad feeling somewhat samey, which is a little bit of a let down after Gaunt's Ghosts gave us such distinct characters, but it's not as egregious as other 40k books.

Better than Eisenhorn?

Great story! It was nice to have a linear story that didn't bounce from subplot or memory scapes from past to present. I am hoping for more like this and perhaps a BotS2... again... GREAT STORY.

Disappointing

SJW insert Dan needs to stick with nonmarines. Too Many little things that didn’t fit into the grand 40k timeline.

Solid Abnett and Longworth

There were a couple spots where a line was read twice, but it's a solid performance by Longworth all the same! Abnett consistently proves he's one of the best in Black Library's writers-bullpen.

A great space marine story

My first foray into actually reading the various novels and anthologies of the Warhammer 40k setting. If you're in a similar place as me, where you're a big fan of the IP but are unsure of where to start in terms of stories, this is absolutely a good first read. Those who want a taste of Dan Abnett's style and skill will like this collection. It is in fact not so much one singular narrative as a series of snapshots in the life of one space marine, from the Ultramarines successor of the Iron Snakes. The culture and habits of the marines shine through, and the character writing is by far the best part of this book. Dan Abnett not only makes some riveting characters, but injects great amounts of humor into the classic Warhammer darkness and action. With a snappy pace and skill at conveying detail, this is a quick read that's nonetheless packed with entertainment. Abnett also does a good job of dissecting the psychology of an Astartes, and overall the story has a very tight scope and humanist perspective. It's not some big galactic epic. It's the story of a particular corner of the cosmos and the people whose lives are tied to it. I'd say there's nothing overly spectacular about the book. It's still pulp fiction for Warhammer 40k. But it's very GOOD pulp fiction, and if you want solid entertainment, Brotherhood of the Snake definitely delivers.

Wonderful book meets wonderful narration

It's been 10 years since I read it for the first time and it was my entrance into the great world of warhammer 40k. Now, I decided to revisit this book via audio and it didn't disappoint. The narrator is great and manages to create 5 different voice personas so you never get lost. I cannot recommend it enough!

Brilliant

Good storytelling, all in all well worth it. It paints a broad picture of the Snakes chapter as a whole.

Hell of a Book

I really really like the Book. Tony Longworth aus one of my absolute favourite speakers and I just loved to look into the doings of a chapter, induction, squad action, single action, internal quarrels and their spiritual style. I have really enjoyed this one

Well written introduction to the space marines

You want to know what Warhammer 40k is about? Start here! Dan Abnett's book intriduces many concepts of the Warhammer 40K world and space marine culture. The book is well written, the story structure is pretty straight forward. Toby Longworth as always does an excellent job!
