Description

Winner of the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award for Best Novella!

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs.

Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares. Oomza University has wronged the Meduse, and Binti's stellar travel will bring her within their deadly reach.

If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making, she will need both the the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself — but first she has to make it there, alive.

Praise for Binti
"With her rich, lyrical voice, narrator Robin Miles effortlessly moves among such emotions as anticipation, fear, resignation, and fortitude with just the slightest adjustments in breath. Her prodigious range elevates this short novella into a resonating performance that will linger long beyond its mere two-plus hours." – School Library Journal

"Binti is a supreme read about a sexy, edgy Afropolitan in space! It's a wondrous combination of extra-terrestrial adventure and age-old African diplomacy. Unforgettable!" — Wanuri Kahiu, award-winning Kenyan film director of Punzi and From a Whisper

Wonderful Piece of Afro-Futurism

A great novella, well-deserving of the Nebula Award it won. Binti is a neat glimpse into a sci-fi future where individual culture is still present. I look forward to reading what comes next.

Messages

Firstly, it's always great to read stories about people of color in scifi and fantasy. We do exist in the future.
Binti was unsurprisingly inventive and well written, as this is written by Nnedi O. My favorite bit tho is that this simple tale is so chock full of potential lessons and messages. For this alone it is worth every minute it takes to complete.

Initially Intimated

This genre was different for me. I'd seen ppl mentioning this book & author on Twitter which piqued my interest. I bought the book months ago and added the Audible option to it but did not listen to it until yesterday (12.30.16). I absolutely loved it! I laughed, cried, and wanted more. I hadn't realized it was a novella until I was halfway through it. Admittedly, I had to condition my ears and my brain to listen and understand an accent with inflections, enunciation, and pronunciation that I was not used to hearing. In other words, I had to stop being lazy. The narrator was excellent. I truly almost missed out on a wonderful experience. I was on that journey with Binti. The descriptions were so brilliant. I felt a range of emotions with her and for her. I was afraid for her through most of the story. I was proud of her too. And I was SO offended that a stranger touched her hair without asking that I may have blurted out some expletives on her behalf. I am going to read it. I need to see the words. I will probably end up buying a hard copy as well so I can read it slow and write in the margins. Then I will listen to it again. I was sad when it ended because I wasn't ready for the journey to end. I want to know how her parents will react. And how her people will respond to her being a pioneer. I recommend that everyone read this book. This is definitely worth your time and money.

Absolutely Perfect!

This novella is simply awesome. One of the best short stories I've ever read. It had me totally entranced right from the beginning. I got hints of Scalzi, Reynolds - even Star Wars. The world felt refreshingly original, and the prose was just right for the character. And the narrator - the narrator was perfect! I was drawn right in and felt like I was there - like I knew Binti personally. If she were real, I would want to be friends.

This story is a breath of fresh air to the space opera genre. I want more. I want more of this character, this storyline and this universe. It weaves together a wonderful character, excellent backstory and worldbuilding, exotic aliens and locations - it's simply... magical.

This is an incredibly talented author. I definitely want her to write more, and I want to read all of it. Do yourself a favor, and listen to this one.

Feels Incomplete

I'd like to start by saying I love the story. It just seems incomplete. The story surrounds one major event and afterward, well, just end. It left me feeling cheated. This story has a lot of potential, but I'll wait until the entire series is completed and combined as part of a special and just get the book then.

I would read a 100 more novels just like this one. Every book she writes is a complete pleasure to read.

Too short for such interesting premises!

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. However, like most novellas, this left me unsatisfied as I wanted more of the story. Okorafor adroitly sketches a future with space travel and multiple alien species, where Earth seems to be partially left behind, and some mixture of math, science, and seeming magic are practiced. The eponymous protagonist is fascinating and engaging, and I needed more of her story. So I recommend this novella, but warn that it is not enough of this interesting future society to satisfy.
