Description

A debt of honor: One brave woman ventures alone into a parallel universe to save her old shipmates exiled there decades earlier by a mysterious device called the Transfer Key. She soon learns the alternate universe harbors not just an alien invasion force but a secret that underpins its very existence.

A mission of peace: A long-awaited Klingon-Federation peace conference convenes, led by Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan and Councillor Gorkon of Qo'noS. But both sides have enemies who would prefer the two great powers remain at war - and who will do anything to make certain hate wins the day.

An errand of justice: Captain Kirk and his crew seek the stolen Transfer Key that opens a door between universes, but their hunt is cut short by Ambassador Sarek's plea for help. The Enterprise crew soon become targets in a deadly crossfire - one whose outcome will decide the fate of two universes.

Great continuation of this Star Trek 50th Anniversary Trilogy

David Mack does an excellent job of continuing this story of intrigue, loyalty, and deception. His characterizations are both accurate and yet startling as the conflicts continue to rise and raise in tempo and intensity (specifically the Kirk/Sarek and McCoy/daughter relationships). I'm amazed how two different writers (first Cox and now Mack) seamlessly construct a story that unites a theme and an overall vision for the trilogy. I highly anticipate reading the next one and enjoying the conclusion to this fantastic Star Trek trilogy.

Great sequel

Definitely an edge of your seat action packed adventure. Not as many plot twist as the last book but definitely more action and still felt true to the characters.

IT IS AS FAR AS IT IS

SHE HAD LET HER MIND WONDER, SO HAD MISSED A TRANSITION
Wow, the characters in the book had the same problem I had. My mind wondered, no matter how hard I tried to concentrate. Book one, was good, maybe they should not have changed authors?
HER SMILE WAS AS COLD AND DEADLY AS FATE.

The series ends here for me.

Large drop off from 1st book in the series

What could David Mack have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Write an engaging story vs just move along a plot line. It truly seemed like he was trying to get from point A to point B in this book and that's what he did . It was journey without any great moments along the way.

Which character – as performed by Robert Petkoff – was your favorite?

Dr McCoy was perfect, his narration is all that saved this one for me

Do you think Best Defense needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Great question. When I started this book I had every intention of getting the third to finish the series. By then end of this book I was done and had no interest in wasting a credit to get the third book. I debated the purchase then told myself that I really did not care what happened as I had to work too hard to get to the end of this one. Too bad as I am a big Star Trek fan.

Loved The First Book... Hated This One

I'm huge Trek fan (Trekkie), and so I've been devouring the books for the last year or two. This first book in this series was great, because it was a great story, told very true to the Star Trek tradition, complete with tough moral dilemmas, great characters, extremely formidable enemies, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat tension and drama. This was is so different. First off, in this book you have REALLY stupid enemies, so dumb that they practically fall over each other to kill themselves off. You have an arguable even more inept Starfleet (which unfortunately includes the Enterprise), and a story with so many gaping holes in it that it really detracts from the reading/listening. I'm not really that picky about this stuff. Give me a great story, and some characters that I care about and I'm good, but sheesh. It really is painfully clear that this is not the same writer as the first book. You don't even have to look at the name to know that. Furthermore, the entire story told in this book is pretty much pointless. None of the stuff that happens in this book even moves the needle of the overall story imo. If I would have just not read/listened to this book and just simply picked up the third book after the first, I wouldn't have missed much.

Fantastic Momentum

Usually the second in a series either equals or all too often falls from the expectations generated from the first, this is one of those wonderful exceptions that exceeded its previous, first book. There wasn't a point I thought too drawn out or asked myself, why was that there, just a good pacing of events, characters that came across faithful to themselves and how they reacted to events. The performance was again fantastic, I found myself wishing Mr. Petkoff would go back to previous books and be the reader to them. Each character, and not just the main cast, was so wonderfully portrayed with narration that conveyed moods from tension to sadness to happiness and relief. From writing to performance, Mack and Petkoff deliver an engaging and delightful experience that takes the mind to the place of Trek with the kind of story I completely enjoyed.

Maybe a little slow but still good.

Like some of the other reviews this book may have been a little slow moving. Regardless a lot of characters, and an intriguing other universe. Worth hearing if you are a fan.
