For him, poetry helps to protect his individuality in an isolated and structured environment. The military, in particular, validated the importance of emotional transparency and mental health. His first poetry book, Beautiful Chaos, depicts the evolving emotions and perspectives of the author throughout his life. Love, race, spirituality, acceptance, and faith are prevalent themes.
