The plate shows a butcher’s shop of the Anzique cannibals. Then the owner of the house comes down the stairs, very old and very friendly, and eager to talk about his favourite picture.
Written in 1920, The Picture in the House is the story that introduced Lovecraft’s Arkham country and the Miskatonic Valley. It is a short, perfectly controlled masterpiece of New England gothic and one of the most quietly horrifying tales in weird fiction.
