Sophie and Matt are back after a little break to discuss Wildwood, Laika's ambitious stop-motion adventure that's as visually stunning as it is surprisingly intense. They marvel at the painstaking animation, debate whether the film tries to cram too many stories and emotions into one adventure, and wonder if traditional stop-motion filmmaking is becoming an endangered art form.
There's also plenty of talk about the magic of cinema, the questionable idea that animation is automatically for children, and whether a film can be beautiful without necessarily being brilliant. Naturally, things take a detour into a surprisingly detailed analysis of cinema nachos, the importance of a properly curved tortilla chip, and why Sophie's smart ring thinks she's asleep when she's actually eating.
Who knew a trip into an enchanted forest would end with such strong opinions about melted cheese?
