It follows the influence of Michelle Remembers, a controversial nineteen eighty book built around recovered memories; the McMartin Preschool investigation in Manhattan Beach, California; the police letter sent to hundreds of families; disputed interviews with children; and a search for alleged underground rooms that reportedly found none.

The question is not whether child abuse exists. It does, and investigators faced serious allegations that demanded careful attention. The harder question is whether those real fears established a coordinated nationwide Satanic network abusing children through ritual crimes.

Contemporary critics challenged Rivera’s special within days of its broadcast. Later, the McMartin prosecution ended without convictions, while an FBI investigator’s guide found little or no evidence for the broad claims of organized Satanic conspiracies, human sacrifice, and baby breeding.
