Void Caller is epic fantasy that embodies the best of the genre—perfect for fans of R. F. Kuang, Garth Nix, Olivie Blake, and Philip Pullman.
In a vast city built around a sprawling university—in which Academics have studied the heavens for decades, learning to bind the stars and their separate dominions into complex spells—a woman is about to be executed. Her crime is hereditary: a Void Caller, she possesses an inherited power rivalling that of the mages and their constellations. Void Callers are feared, hunted, exterminated as soon as they are discovered, for the longer they draw on their powers the more likely they are to pull in something from the Void, something with a power even more destructive than their own.
Among those watching are the woman’s sister, Anghard, and her infant son, Osian—as well as Livia, the precocious young daughter of sweetcake-sellers catering to the crowd. But as the rope drops and the woman dies, the air fills with heat and the telltale scent of flowers and ozone. Someone is Void Calling, and something big is about to make its way into the world. Void Callers ordinarily only come into their powers in their early teens, so no one could predict that Osian would manifest his at such a young age. Hundreds die that day, including Livia’s parents.
Fifteen years later, Osian hides his identity, knowing that it could get him killed. The orphaned Livia is the University’s star student, a generational talent at hunting down Void Callers. Angharad is making her way through the wasteland of the world, where the numberless dead assemble under the stars every night. And as their orbits draw them inexorably closer, Livia, Osian, and Angharad will find themselves in the midst of a war beyond their imagination.

“A humane and compassionate look at a fascinating life, the complexity of gender, and the destructive legacy of being the child of the world’s most famous alpha male.”
(Patrick Ness, bestselling and award-winning author of the Chaos Walking Trilogy, on The Broken Places)“Sunlit and dark, painful and joyous…A myth-busting novel of rare skill and integrity.”
(David Mitchell, bestselling author of Cloud Atlas, on The Broken Places)“I was completely caught up by it and found it intensely moving…The central character is imagined so fully that their fractured memories now feel like my own and I left the book sad to be leaving a person I had grown to care about greatly.”
(Elizabeth Cook, bestselling author of Achilles, on The Broken Places)
