Kett Stannard is the worst student of all time. The worst in the Academys 400-year history. Four years of exploding labs, ruined reagents, and formulas that come out wrong every single time have earned him a reputation, a permanent scorch mark on the east wing, and an expulsion the Academy is thrilled to sign. He leaves with a very unimpressed cat and a body that heals faster than it should. Fortunately, Prossick doesn't care about his transcript. The frontier town needs someone willing to work the dungeons, and Kett needs somewhere far enough from the Academy that nobody asks questions. He falls in with a party no proper guild would sponsor: a healer who lost her gift, a swordsman who's been stuck at the same level for two years and won't say why, and a scout the kingdom's official records have never bothered to acknowledge. His potions keep failing upward. A ruined salve heals what medicine can't touch. A dungeon creature that should have torn his throat out follows him home instead. The old tavern keeper has started pouring two ales from the same cask one with Kett in the room, one without and hasn't told anyone why he does it. Four years of astronomical failure built something the Academy never tested for. Something incredible.©2026 Rourke Barro (P)2026 Rourke Barro
