The start of paying off debt is exciting. The finish line is a celebration. But the middle? The middle is just... Tuesday.
In this episode, I'm talking about the long middle stretch of a money journey, when the early energy fades, progress feels slow, and it's easy for couples to drift into feeling like they're each doing this alone.
I open with a road trip with my kids and that long stretch in the middle of the drive, when everyone is tired and the destination still feels far away. Then I share why the middle of paying off debt feels exactly the same, why it isn't a willpower problem (it's a connection problem), and three simple ways to stay on the same team until you get to the other side.
October is Momentum month here on the podcast, in the newsletter, and inside the Debt-Free Collective.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why the middle of a money journey is where so many couples quietly lose momentum
- What the middle often looks like in a marriage, from one partner checking out to the other feeling like they're carrying it alone
- Why hitting the middle isn't a sign you're failing, but a sign you're actually in it
- Three things that carry couples through the middle together
- One question to bring to your next money date
Three things that carry couples through the middle
1. Shrink the finish line. The last debt can feel too far away to be real. Pick the next finish line together instead: the next debt, the next $1,000, the end of this month. Momentum comes from finish lines you can actually see.
2. Check in on each other, not just the numbers. In the middle, money dates can turn into numbers in, numbers out, done. Add one human question: "How are you doing with all this?" The partner who's quietly worn out usually won't bring it up. They need to be asked.
3. Name the middle out loud. Say it together: "We're in the hard part." Naming it turns a vague frustration into something you share, and it stops the blame before it starts.
Try this week
- At your next money date, ask each other: "Does this feel like the middle to you?" Then just listen.
- Choose your next visible finish line together and write it down somewhere you'll both see it.
- For the rest of October, start every money date with "How are you doing?" before you look at the numbers.
