Pass It On! by Gloria J. McEwen Burgess and illustrated by Gerald Purnell is an historical visual biography of the intertwined legacies of the author’s father, Earnest McEwen Jr., and Nobel laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Faulkner. As a young boy in the segregated South of the 1930s, Ernie dreamed of a brighter future for his family. More than anything, he wanted to go to college. While working as a janitor at the University of Mississippi, Ernie spoke to a professor about his burning desire to go to college, setting in motion a series of events that would accelerate the trajectory of his and his family’s life. One of those significant events was meeting Nobel laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Faulkner. Faulkner recognized Ernie’s exceptional leadership qualities and helped him attend college, paying for his tuition and expenses with no strings attached. After graduating from college, Ernie and his wife Millie continued to work very hard to make a better life for their family. Their daughters and extended family live a legacy of life-long learning and service, passing on their blessings to this generation, creating a ripple effect that will bless generations to come.©2018 Gloria J.
