Why Perfect Stock Trends Are Red Flags

What if a stock trend looks too good to be true?

In this episode of Trail Boss Radio, we take a ride through the latest Bull Run Weekly Investment Report and look at one of the most important ideas in the Trail Boss Bot's ARDL model: persistence.

A strong trend can look attractive on the surface. But when persistence gets too close to 1.0, the mathematics starts telling us something different.

The Bull Run Weekly uses an ARDL(2,2) model to separate a stock's own price momentum from outside forces such as CPI inflation, the Federal Funds Rate, the 10-year Treasury yield, and WTI crude oil. The model then looks at both short-run shocks and longer-term relationships.

The 0.90 Red Flag

The report uses 0.90 as a warning threshold.

When persistence rises above 0.90, the stock begins behaving too much like a pure random walk. That makes the long-run mathematical calculation unstable, so the model flags the long-run number and tells us to pay closer attention to the short-run reading instead.

And this week's numbers give us some good examples:

  • VNQ — 0.920

  • KVUE — 0.905

  • NUE — 0.908

Those aren't necessarily “bad” numbers. They are warning lights for the model.

Meanwhile, the Major League stayed below the threshold, while the Small-Cap League's highest reading was PSC at 0.890. That's the lesson:

Don't just ask, “Is the trend going up?”

Ask:

“How strong is the persistence behind that trend, and can the model still trust its long-run math?”

The Bull Run Weekly isn't trying to predict the future with a crystal ball. It is building a statistical weather report—a learning record that helps us understand what the numbers are saying before we decide what they might mean.
